Reduction of 400  GeV/c slow extraction beam loss with a wire diffuser at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Jorat, Louise (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Lolliot, Christophe (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda Susan (CERN) ; van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) et al.
Slow extraction of a quasicontinuous flux of high-energy protons is an important requirement for many high-energy physics experiments. This extraction type is associated with an unavoidable beam loss due to scattering on the thin septum element. [...]

Demonstration of slow extraction loss reduction with the application of octupoles at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda Susanne (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U.)
The powering of octupoles during third-integer resonant slow extraction has been studied and recently tested with the beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in order to increase the extraction efficiency and reduce the induced radioactivity along the extraction straight. The octupoles distort the particle trajectories in phase space in such a way that the extracted separatrix is folded, which decreases the particle density impinging the wires of the extraction septum at the expense of increasing the extracted beam emittance. Optimization of Diffuser (Pre-Scatterer) Configurations for Slow Extraction Loss Reduction at Electrostatic Septa / Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Jorat, Louise Olivia (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Lolliot, Christophe (CERN) ; Nagaslaev, Vladimir (Fermilab) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) et al.
Uncontrolled beam loss at the electrostatic septum is a performance limit for several existing or planned high power hadron accelerators delivering slow-extracted spills to fixed targets. A passive diffuser, or pre-scatterer, in a suitable configuration has been shown to reduce such beamloss significantly, with the actual gain factor depending on the parameters and details of the extraction process and hardware. Training-free performance of the wax-impregnated SuShi septum magnet / Barna, D (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Brunner, K (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Novák, M (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Atanasov, M (CERN) ; Lackner, F (CERN) ; Olvegård, M (Uppsala U.) ; Pepitone, K (Uppsala U.) ; Santiago Kern, R (Uppsala U.) ; Svanberg, C (Uppsala U.) et al.
In the framework of the Future Circular Collider Study a new septum magnet concept, nicknamed ‘SuShi’ has been developed, and a prototype was built at Wigner Research Center for Physics, and tested at the FREIA facility of Uppsala University in April 2023. The concept uses a canted cosine theta (CCT)-like superconducting magnet and a passive superconducting shield to create a zero-field and high-field region within its aperture. [...]

We present the progress related to CERN’s capacity of delivering highly penetrating, high-linear energy transfer (LET) heavy ions for radiation effect testing of electronic components within the CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) project. Profiting from the existing accelerator infrastructure, Monte Carlo simulations, and a 300- $\mu $ m-thick silicon diode, we highlight the beam characterization capabilities and a summary of the beam properties. Empty-bucket techniques for spill-quality improvement at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Arrutia Sota, Pablo A (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew A (CERN) ; Hagmann, Gregoire (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Spierer, Arthur (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco M (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK) ; Piandani, Roberto (San Luis Potosi U.)
Synchrotrons can provide long spills of particles by employing resonant extraction where the circulating beam is slowly ejected over thousands to millions of turns by exploiting the amplitude growth caused by a transverse resonance. In the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), this method is used to satisfy the experimental requests of the North Area. [...]

Exploring the potential of resonance islands and bent crystals for a slow extraction from circular hadron accelerators / Veres, D.E. (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M. (CERN) ; Franchetti, G. (Darmstadt, GSI)
New developments in accelerator physics have broadened the set of available techniques for manipulating charged-particle beams. Adiabatic trapping and transport of beam in resonance islands has been studied and successfully implemented at the CERN Proton Synchrotron to perform multiturn extraction. [...]

Use of a Massless Septum to Increase Slow-Extraction Efficiency / Brunner, Kristóf (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN provides slow-extracted beam for Fixed Target experiments in the North Area. For the higher extracted beam intensities requested by future experimental proposals, beam-loss induced activation will be one of the limiting factors for the availability of such a facility. [...]

Septum shadowing by means of a bent crystal to reduce slow extraction beam loss / Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Prieto, Javier (CERN) ; Rossi, Roberto (CERN) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN) et al.
The flux of high-energy protons slow-extracted from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is limited by the induced radioactivity caused by the beam loss intrinsic to the extraction process. Methods to substantially increase the efficiency of the extraction process are of great interest to fulfill requests for an increasing flux of 400 GeV protons to the present experiments, located in the North Area of the SPS, and also for potential future experiments with very high demanded protons on target. [...]
