The light yield, the time resolution and the efficiency of different types of scintillating tiles with direct Silicon Photomultiplier readout and instrumented with a customised front-end electronics have been measured at the Beam Test Facility of Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati and several test stands. The results obtained with different configurations are presented. [...]

First results on new helium based eco-gas mixtures for the Extreme Energy Events Project / EEE Collaboration
The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project, a joint project of the Centro Fermi (Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche "E.Fermi") and INFN, has a dual purpose: a scientific research program on cosmic rays at ground level and an intense outreach and educational program. The project consists in a network of about 60 tracking detectors, called telescopes, mostly hosted in Italian High Schools. [...]

In this paper evidence that the increased response of SiPM sensors to the passage of charged particles is related mainly to Cherenkov light produced in the protection layer is reported. The response and timing properties of sensors with different protection layers have been studied..

A compact light readout system for longitudinally segmented shashlik calorimeters / Berra, A. (INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Insubria U., Como) ; Brizzolari, C. (INFN, Bologna ; Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna ; Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Meregaglia, A. (Strasbourg, IPHC ; Louis Pasteur U., Strasbourg I) et al.
The longitudinal segmentation of shashlik calorimeters is challenged by dead zones and non-uniformities introduced by the light collection and readout system. This limitation can be overcome by direct fiber-photosensor coupling, avoiding routing and bundling of the wavelength shifter fibers and embedding ultra-compact photosensors (SiPMs) in the bulk of the calorimeter. In this paper, different Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) sensors have been tested with charged particles to characterize the Cherenkov light produced in the sensor protection layer. A careful position scan of the SiPM response has been performed with different prototypes, confirming the large number of firing cells and proving almost full efficiency, with the SiPM filling factor essentially negligible. Recoil Proton Telescopes and Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters for the $^{235}$U(n,f) cross section measurement relative to H(n,n)H between 10 and 450 MeV neutron energy / n_TOF Collaboration
With the aim of measuring the $^{235}$U(n,f) cross section at the n_TOF facility at CERN over a wide neutron energy range, a detection system consisting of two fission detectors and three detectors for neutron flux determination was realized. The neutron flux detectors are Recoil Proton Telescopes (RPT), based on scintillators and solid state detectors, conceived to detect recoil protons from the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction. Ecological transition for the gas mixtures of the MRPC cosmic ray telescopes of the EEE Project / EEE Collaboration
The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Collaboration is fully involved in an ecological transition. The use of the standard gas mixture, \ce{C_2H_2F_4}+ \ce{SF_6}, has stopped in favor of an alternative green mixture based on \ce{C_3H_2F_4} with the addition of He or \ce{CO_2}. [...]
