We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hard-scattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and next-to-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based on the showering approximation; the parton and dipole shower formulations; parton distribution functions for event generators; non-perturbative aspects such as soft QCD collisions, the underlying event and diffractive processes; the string and cluster models for hadron formation; the treatment of hadron and tau decays; the inclusion of QED radiation and beyond-Standard-Model processes. A new approach to multi-jet calculations in hadron collisions / Caravaglios, F. (CERN) ; Mangano, Michelangelo L. (CERN) ; Moretti, M. (CERN ; Ferrara U. ; INFN, Ferrara) ; Pittau, R. (CERN)
We present an algorithm to evaluate the exact, tree-level matrix elements for multi-parton processes in QCD. We tested this technique, based on the recursive evaluation of the S-matrix, on processes such as gg -> n gluons and q qbar -> n gluons, with n up to 9. [...]

Soft QCD models and general-purpose Monte Carlo simulation / Siódmok, Andrzej (CERN ; Cracow, INP)
We begin with a brief description of the main building blocks of Monte Carlo event generators (MCEG) for the full simulation of hadron–hadron collisions. Next, we focus on soft QCD models and in particular on Multiple Partonic Interaction (MPI) models that are implemented in MCEG. Finally, we present a comparison of three main Monte Carlo event generators, Herwig++, PYTHIA and SHERPA, and also a cosmic-rays model EPOS to a range of LHC data sets which are sensitive to the MPI activity..

In this paper we describe Herwig++ version 2.1, a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of hard lepton-lepton and hadron-hadron collisions. A number of important hard scattering processes are available, together with an interface via the Les Houches Accord to specialized matrix element generators for additional processes. [...]

W gamma production in hadronic collisions using the POWHEG+MiNLO method / Barze, Luca (CERN) ; Chiesa, Mauro (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Montagna, Guido (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Nason, Paolo (INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Nicrosini, Oreste (INFN, Pavia) ; Piccinini, Fulvio (INFN, Pavia) ; Prosperi, Valeria (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia)
We detail a calculation of W gamma production in hadronic collision, at Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD interfaced to a shower generator according to the POWHEG prescription supplemented with the MiNLO procedure. The fixed order result is matched to an interleaved QCD+QED parton shower, in such a way that the contribution arising from hadron fragmentation into photons is fully modeled. [...]

HERWIG 6 : an event generator for Hadron Emission Reactions With Interfering Gluons (including supersymmetric processes) / Corcella, G. (Rochester U.) ; Knowles, I.G. (Edinburgh U.) ; Marchesini, G. HERWIG is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator, which includes the simulation of hard lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering and soft hadron-hadron collisions in one package. It uses the parton-shower approach for initial- and final-state QCD radiation, including colour coherence effects and azimuthal correlations both within and between jets. [...]

Investigation of beauty production and parton shower effects at LHC / Jung, H. (DESY ; CERN) ; Kraemer, M. (DESY) ; Lipatov, A.V. (Moscow State U.) ; Zotov, N.P. (Moscow State U.)
We present hadron-level predictions from the Monte Carlo generator Cascade and parton level calculations of open b quark, b-flavored hadron and inclusive b-jet production in the framework of the kt-factorization QCD approach for the LHC energies. The unintegrated gluon densities in a proton are determined using the CCFM evolution equation and the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription. [...]
