The effects of disorder on the normal state and superconducting properties of Nb$_3$Sn
/ Mentink, M G T (CERN) ; Dhalle, M M J (Twente U., Enschede) ; Dietderich, D R (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Godeke, A (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Hellman, F (UC, Berkeley (main)) ; ten Kate, H H J (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede)
The effect of disorder on the normal state resistivity and the superconducting properties of Nb${}_{3}$Sn is explored in a combination of ab initio calculations and microscopic theory. The crystal symmetry is calculated to be preferentially tetragonal at a normal state resistivity below 27.0 ± 1.4 $\mu {\rm{\Omega }}\mathrm{cm}$, and preferentially cubic above this value, which is shown to be consistent with the experimentally observed transition point. Quench Behavior of the HL-LHC Twin Aperture Orbit Correctors
/ Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Mangiarotti, Franco (CERN) ; Duda, Michal (CERN ; Cracow, INP) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN)
A study was performed to understand the quench behavior and ensure adequate quench protection of the canted cosine theta (CCT) twin aperture orbit corrector magnet, a superconducting magnet under development as part of the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The cosine theta geometry features canted superconducting coils, which together produce a magnetic dipole field. [...]

Direct Measurement of Inter-Filament Resistance in Superconducting Multifilamentary NbTi and Nb(3)Sn Strands
/ Zhou, C (Twente U., Enschede) ; Nijhuis, A (Twente U., Enschede) ; Veldhuis, D (Twente U., Enschede) ; van Lanen, E P A (Twente U., Enschede) ; ten Kate, H H J (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede) ; Dhalle, M (Twente U., Enschede)
A quantitative knowledge of inter-filament transverse resistance will allow us to describe current redistribution processes inside strands more accurately. This is particularly important for the analysis of the influence of strain and crack distribution patterns in Nb(3)Sn filaments on the shape of the voltage-current curves. [...]

Heat transfer at dielectric - metallic interfaces in the ultra-low temperature range
/ Liberadzka, J (CERN ; Twente U., Enschede) ; Golm, J (CERN) ; Koettig, T (CERN) ; Bremer, J (CERN) ; ter Brake, H J M (Twente U., Enschede)
In the framework of the AEgIS project a series of steady state and dynamic
heat transfer measurements at ultra-low temperatures was conducted in the Central Cryogenic
Laboratory at CERN. Two sandwich setups, simulating the behaviour of ultra-cold AEgIS
electrodes, were investigated and compared, namely: a sapphire − indium − copper and a
sapphire − titanium − gold − indium − copper sandwich. [...]

Modeling heat transfer from quench protection heaters to superconducting cables in Nb$_{3}$Sn magnets
/ Salmi, T. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Arbelaez, D. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Caspi, S. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Felice, H. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Prestemon, S. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Chlachidze, G. (Fermilab) ; ten Kate, H. H. J. (Twente U., Enschede)
We use a recently developed quench protection heater modeling tool for an analysis of heater delays in superconducting high-field Nb$_{3}$Sn accelerator magnets. The results suggest that the calculated delays are consistent with experimental data, and show how the heater delay depends on the main heater design parameters..

/ den Ouden, Andries (Twente U. Tech., Enschede) ; Wessel, Sander (Twente U. Tech., Enschede) ; Krooshoop, Erik (Twente U. Tech., Enschede) ; ten Kate, Herman (Twente U. Tech., Enschede)
Last year a record central field of 11 T at first excitation at 4.4 K has been achieved with the experimental LHC model dipole magnet MSUT by utilising a high J$_c$ powder-in-tube Nb$_3$Sn conductor. This is the first real breakthrough towards fields well above 10 T at 4 K. [...]

Protecting a Full-Scale Nb$_3$Sn Magnet with CLIQ, the New Coupling-Loss-Induced Quench System

A new protection system for superconducting magnets called coupling-loss induced quench system (CLIQ) has been recently developed at CERN. Recent tests on Nb-Ti coils have shown that CLIQ is a valid, efficient, and promising method for the protection of high-magnetic-field superconducting magnets. [...]

Very high upper critical fields and enhanced critical current densities in Nb$_3$Sn superconductors based on Nb–Ta–Zr alloys and internal oxidation

The inhibition of Nb$_3$Sn grain growth in the presence of ZrO$_2$ nanoparticles appears to be one of
the most promising method for pushing the critical current densities of Nb$_3$Sn superconducting
wires to levels that meet the requirements set for the Future Circular Collider. We have investigated
the effect of ZrO$_2$ nanoparticles formed by the internal oxidation of Zr on the superconducting
properties and microstructure of Nb3Sn formed from Nb-1 wt%Zr, Nb-7.5 wt%Ta,
Nb-7.5 wt%Ta-1 wt%Zr and Nb-7.5 wt%Ta-2 wt%Zr alloys. [...]
