Coherent sub-femtosecond soft x-ray free-electron laser pulses with nonlinear compression / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Arrell, Christopher (PSI, Villigen) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen) ; Reiche, Sven (PSI, Villigen) ; Schietinger, Thomas (PSI, Villigen) ; Wang, Guanglei (PSI, Villigen)
We demonstrate the generation of coherent soft x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses with a duration below 1 fs using nonlinear compression with a low-charge electron beam (10 pC). The approach is simple, and it does not require any special hardware, so it can be readily implemented at any x-ray FEL facility. [...]

Sub-femtosecond time-resolved measurements of electron bunches with a C-band radio-frequency deflector in x-ray free-electron lasers / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen)
Time-resolved diagnostics are fundamental for x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). Radio-frequency (RF) transverse deflector structures (TDSs) are typically employed to characterize the temporal properties of the electron beams driving FELs. [...]

An X-ray free-electron laser with a highly configurable undulator and integrated chicanes for tailored pulse properties / Prat, Eduard (PSI, Villigen) ; Haddad, Andre Al (PSI, Villigen) ; Arrell, Christopher (PSI, Villigen) ; Augustin, Sven (PSI, Villigen) ; Boll, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Bostedt, Christoph (PSI, Villigen ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Calvi, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Cavalieri, Adrian L (PSI, Villigen ; Bern U.) ; Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen) ; Dax, Andreas (PSI, Villigen) et al.
X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) are state-of-the-art scientific tools capable to study matter on the scale of atomic processes. Since the initial operation of X-ray FELs more than a decade ago, several facilities with upgraded performance have been put in operation. [...]

Frequency and spatially chirped free-electron laser pulses / Reiche, S (PSI, Villigen) ; Bacellar, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Bougiatioti, P (PSI, Villigen) ; Cirelli, C (PSI, Villigen) ; Dijkstal, P (PSI, Villigen ; DESY) ; Ferrari, E (PSI, Villigen ; DESY) ; Juranic, P (PSI, Villigen) ; Knopp, G ; Malyzhenkov, 2A (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Milne, C (PSI, Villigen ; European XFEL, Hamburg) et al.
We have produced hard x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses, which are chirped both in photon energy and in spatial position. The experiments have been carried out at the hard x-ray beamline Aramis at SwissFEL, located at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland [...]

SwissFEL Aramis beamline photon diagnostics / Juranic, Pavle (PSI, Villigen) ; Rehanek, Jens (PSI, Villigen) ; Arrell, Christopher A (PSI, Villigen) ; Pradervand, Claude (PSI, Villigen) ; Cassar, Ariana (U. Malta) ; Calvi, Marco (PSI, Villigen) ; Ischebeck, Rasmus (PSI, Villigen) ; Erny, Christian (PSI, Villigen) ; Heimgartner, Peter (PSI, Villigen) ; Gorgisyan, Ishkhan (CERN) et al.
The SwissFEL Aramis beamline, covering the photon energies between 1.77 keV and 12.7 keV, features a suite of online photon diagnostics tools to help both users and FEL operators in analysing data and optimizing experimental and beamline performance. Scientists will be able to obtain information about the flux, spectrum, position, pulse length, and arrival time jitter versus the experimental laser for every photon pulse, with further information about beam shape and size available through the use of destructive screens. Sub-Femtosecond Time-Resolved Measurements Based on a Variable Polarization X-Band Transverse Deflecting Structures for SwissFEL / Craievich, Paolo (PSI, Villigen) ; Aßmann, Ralph (DESY) ; Bopp, Markus (PSI, Villigen) ; Braun, Hans-Heinrich (PSI, Villigen) ; Catalán Lasheras, Nuria (CERN) ; Christie, Florian (DESY) ; D'Arcy, Richard (DESY) ; Ganter, Romain (PSI, Villigen) ; Grudiev, Alexej (CERN) ; Marchetti, Barbara (DESY) et al.
The SwissFEL project, under commissioning at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), will produce FEL radiation for soft and hard X-rays with pulse durations ranging from a few to several tens of femtoseconds. A collaboration between DESY, PSI and CERN has been established with the aim of developing and building an advanced X-Band transverse deflector structure (TDS) with the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting force. Attosecond x-ray pulses in the LCLS using the slotted foil method / Emma, P ; Borland, M ; Huang, Z
A proposal has been made to generate femtosecond and sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) SASE FEL by using a slotted spoiler foil located at the center of the second bunch compressor chicane. This previous study highlighted a simple case, using the nominal LCLS parameters, to produce a 2-fsec fwhm, 8-keV x-ray pulse. [...]

Attosecond X-ray Source for Light-Triggered Time-Resolved Experiments Associated with the X-ray SASE FEL / Saldin, Evgeny L ; Schneidmiller, Evgeny A ; Yurkov, Mikhail V
We propose a technique for the production of attosecond X-ray pulses which is based on the use of X-ray SASE FEL combined with a femtosecond laser system. A few-cycle optical pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser interacts with the electron beam in a two-period undulator resonant to 800 nm wavelength and produces energy modulation within a slice of the electron bunch.
