Controlling Landau Damping via Feed-Down From High-Order Correctors in the LHC and HL-LHC / Dilly, Joschua (CERN ; Humboldt U., Berlin) ; Maclean, Ewen (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN)
Amplitude detuning measurements in the LHC have shown that a significant amount of detuning is generated in Beam 1 via feed-down from decapole and dodecapole field errors in the triplets of the experiment insertion regions, while in Beam 2 this detuning is negligible. In this study, we investigate the cause of this behavior and we attempt to find corrections that use the feed-down from the nonlinear correctors in the insertion region for amplitude detuning..

Corrections of Feed-Down of Non-Linear Field Errors in LHC and HL-LHC Insertion Regions / Dilly, Joschua (CERN ; Humboldt U., Berlin) ; Maclean, Ewen H (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN)
The optics in the insertion regions of the LHC and its upgrade project the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) are very sensitive to local magnetic errors, due to the extremely high beta-functions present. In collision optics, the non-zero closed orbit in the same region leads to a "feed-down" of high-order errors to lower orders, causing additional effects detrimental to beam lifetime. [...]

Corrections of high-order nonlinearities in the LHC and High-Luminosity LHC beam optics / Dilly, Joschua Werner
The impact of high-order nonlinear magnetic field errors on the performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its planned High-Luminosity upgrade, the HL-LHC, has been extensively studied [...]

Report of the MD6863 performed on the 24th and 25th of June 2022 to establish new corrections for the dodecapole correctors in LHC IP1 and IP5 to mitigate feed-down effects of high-order errors to amplitude detuning. [...]

Beta-beating and amplitude detuning from corrector misalignments in the LHC and HL-LHC / Hulphers, Fredrik
There are correctors in the insertion regions (IRs) of the LHC, known as MCX, which could be misaligned in the transversal plane by up to about 1 mm. [...]

Corrections of Systematic Normal Decapole Field Errors in the HL-LHC Separation/Recombination Dipoles / Dilly, Joschua (CERN ; Humboldt U., Berlin (main)) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN) ; Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN)
Magnetic measurements revealed that the new normal decapole ($b_5$) errors of the recombination dipoles (D2) for the HL-LHC could have a systematic component of up to 11 units. Based on previous studies, it was predicted that the current corrections would not be able to compensate this, thereby leading to a degradation of the dynamic aperture. [...]

First operational dodecapole correction in the LHC / Dilly, J (CERN ; Humboldt U., Berlin (main)) ; Ferrentino, V (CERN ; Naples U.) ; Le Garrec, M (CERN ; Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Maclean, E H (CERN) ; Malina, L (DESY) ; Persson, T (CERN) ; Pugnat, T (CERN) ; van Riesen-Haupt, L (LPHE, Lausanne) ; Soubelet, F (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Tomás, R (CERN)
Amplitude detuning measurements in the LHC have shown that a significant amount of detuning is generated via feed-down from high-order field errors in the magnets of the experiment insertion regions. This undesired effect can be detrimental to the luminosity production of the machine and is expected to be enhanced in the upcoming high-luminosity upgrade of the collider, the HL-LHC. [...]

Report from LHC MD 3312: Replicating HL-LHC DA / Dilly, Joschua Werner (Humboldt University of Berlin (DE)) ; Albert, Markus (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix Simon (CERN) ; Coello De Portugal - Martinez Vazquez, Jaime Maria ; Dalena, Barbara (Université Paris-Saclay (FR)) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Maclean, Ewen Hamish (CERN) ; Malina, Lukas ; Persson, Tobias Hakan Bjorn (CERN) et al.
During MD3312 on the 30.10.2018 the non-linear conditions in the insertion regions of the planned HL-LHC were replicated to our best knowledge and within the capabilities of the hardware currently available in the LHC: A flat ATS-optics scheme of beta* = 15cm / 60cm in IP1 and IP5 was applied as well as sextupole, octupole and (normal) dodecapole errors were introduced into the machine via the corrector magnets in the interaction regions. Optics Correction Strategy for Run 3 of the LHC / Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Cardona, Javier (Colombia, U. After more than 3 years of shutdown the LHC is again operational in 2022. Experience from the previous Long Shutdown (LS) has shown that the local errors in the triplet quadrupoles changed significantly between Run 1 and Run 2, and first measurements in 2022 unveil further changes. [...]
