A Carbon Tracking Model for Federated Learning: Impact of Quantization and Sparsification / Barbieri, Luca (Milan, Polytech.) ; Savazzi, Stefano ; Kianoush, Sanaz ; Nicoli, Monica (Milan, Polytech.) ; Serio, Luigi (CERN)
Federated Learning (FL) methods adopt efficient communication technologies to distribute machine learning tasks across edge devices, reducing the overhead in terms of data storage and computational complexity compared to centralized solutions. Rather than moving large data volumes from producers (sensors, machines) to energy-hungry data centers, raising environmental concerns due to resource demands, FL provides an alternative solution to mitigate the energy demands of several learning tasks while enabling new Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) applications. The Heavy Ion Therapy Research Integration plus (HITRIplus) is a European project that aims to integrate and propel research and technologies related to cancer treatment with heavy ions beams. Among the ambitious goals of the project, a specific work package includes the design of a gantry for carbon ions, based on superconducting magnets. [...]

Decentralized Federated Learning for Healthcare Networks: A Case Study on Tumor Segmentation / Camajori Tedeschini, Bernardo (Milan, Polytech.) ; Savazzi, Stefano (ISTP, Milan) ; Stoklasa, Roman (CERN) ; Barbieri, Luca (Milan, Polytech.) ; Stathopoulos, Ioannis (CERN) ; Nicoli, Monica (Milan, Polytech.) ; Serio, Luigi (CERN)
Smart healthcare relies on artificial intelligence (AI) functions for learning and analysis of patient data. Since large and diverse datasets for training of Machine Learning (ML) models can rarely be found in individual medical centers, classical centralized AI requires moving privacy-sensitive data from medical institutions to data centers that process the fused information. Measurement of $^{12}$C Fragmentation Cross Sections on C, O, and H in the Energy Range of Interest for Particle Therapy Applications / Mattei, I ; Alexandrov, A ; Alunni Solestizi, L ; Ambrosi, G ; Argiro, S ; Bartosik, N ; Battistoni, G ; Belcari, N ; Biondi, S ; Bisogni, M G et al.
In a carbon ion treatment the nuclear fragmentation of both target and beam projectiles impacts on the dose released on the tumor and on the surrounding healthy tissues. Carbon ion fragmentation occurring inside the patient body has to be studied in order to take into account this contribution. [...]

In hadron therapy, the accelerated ions, interacting with the body of the patient, cause the fragmentation of both projectile and target nuclei. The fragments interact with the human tissues depositing energy both in the entrance channel and in the volume surrounding the tumor. [...]

In proton-therapy clinical practice a constant RBE equal to 1.1 is adopted, regardless of the demonstrated RBE variations, which depends on physical and biological parameters. Among other mechanisms, nuclear interactions might influence the proton-RBE due to secondary heavier particles produced by target fragmentation that can significantly contribute to the total dose: an un-wanted and undetermined increase of normal tissues complications probability may occur.
