The EU’s Head of Cooperation Mr. Claudio Bacigalupi and the German Embassy’s Deputy Head of Development Cooperation, Ms. Anne Roeske both acknowledged and welcomed the timely nature of the collaboration in the face of climate change. As part of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, NEWZA is designed to improve sustainable infrastructure development and resource management in the sector. It addresses the critical need for efficient water supply and sanitation services, recognizing their fundamental role in public health, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.      🌾 Empowering Rural Zambia through Savings and Lending Communities 💪 The Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience (FANSER) project team highlighted the significant impact of Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC) have on rural Zambian communities during a one-day SILC Sustainability Summit held on 31st October 2024 in Lusaka. Representatives from the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) and partners, including Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and GIZ, presented the successful savings approaches implemented by FANSER. In over five years, 1,916 SILC groups were established in Katete and Petauke Districts (Eastern Province) and Kawambwa, Mwense and Mwamsabombwe Districts (Luapula Province), involving 49,954 members (80% women), who collectively saved and shared out over 20 million Zambian Kwacha. 👩🌾💼 “Savings and Loan Groups are making a significant impact in rural Zambia, providing vital access to finance, enhancing resilience, and fostering development and better nutrition. These groups empower individuals—especially women—to take control of their financial futures, driving economic growth and community well-being” said Mr. Nicholas Banda, the Acting Director for Department of Community Development in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services. Moving forward, MCDSS officers will receive further training to enhance and expand these impactful initiatives. #GIZ #FANSER #RuralDevelopment #CommunityEmpowerment

📚 Driving Zambia's Food Systems Transformation with Academia and Research💡 The transformation of food systems is crucial for sustainable development, particularly to enable a healthy diet for all within planetary boundaries. Zambia has laid out its Food System Transformation Pathway and National Food and Nutrition Commission of Zambia (NFNC) is leading the implementation of these national pathways with a Technical Working Group.    To support this, on 5th November 2024, the GIZ-Transformation of Food Systems (TES) Project, in collaboration with the University of Zambia, hosted a three-day workshop in Lusaka, bringing together top researchers from institutions like Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research, National Institute for Scientific And Industrial Research and the Copperbelt University among others. The workshop focused on Zambia’s food systems transformation and the potential for science-policy collaboration, with great inputs from Dr. Jody Harris, NFNC, Dr. Anthony Chapoto and Mr. Sibeso Mulele. 👏   One key outcome, was the proposal to establish a Zambia Food Systems Academic Forum to connect researchers, develop a national research agenda and inform science-policy discussions. Plans to develop the forum’s structure and strategy will continue after the workshop. 🎓🤝 #GIZ #TES #NFNC #UNZA #ZIPAR #NISIR #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/d3AJxwDk

🌿 Agricultural Finance Conference in Luapula Province 🌿 On September 18, 2024, GIZ's AgFin project, commissioned by BMZ and in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, hosted the first-ever agricultural conference in Mansa, Luapula Province. This event brought together financial institutions 💰, farmers 🧑🌾, government officials 🏛️, and key agricultural stakeholders under the theme "Strengthening Agricultural Resilience: Tailored Financial Products and Insurance Services for Smallholder Farmers to Adapt to Climate-Induced Shocks." Opening the conference, Luapula’s Provincial Agricultural Coordinator, Mr. Godwin Chate, emphasized the crucial role of financial literacy in enabling smallholder farmers to access finance and invest wisely. With only 60% of the rural population currently financially included, initiatives like the Farmer Financial Cycle Training and the Sustainable Agricultural Finance Facility (SAFF) are making a significant impact. These efforts are not only helping farmers manage loans but also building resilience in the face of climate challenges. As we move into the next farming season, the continued implementation of SAFF, now in its second year, was a major focus of the conference. It showcased the strides the Ministry of Agriculture has made over the last year in combating high interest rates, including the participation of more financial institutions in the agricultural sector, and making loans accessible to all farmers in Zambia. The event provided an open platform for collaboration and exchange. The conference showcased groundbreaking innovations such as drought-resistant seeds, tailored insurance products, and low-energy solar pumps for irrigation, all designed to boost climate resilience🌍🌱. It was inspiring to see the level of innovation and support on display from our partners and collaborators. 🤝 With the Global Programme AgFin in Zambia set to conclude in July 2025, it was a privilege to host this first agricultural conference in Mansa. A huge thank you to all our partners and collaborators for their incredible teamwork over the years! 🙌 For more information, refer to the Zambia Mail article below, offering comprehensive coverage of the conference. #GIZ #AgFinProject #FinancialInclusion

Zambia @60, will Zambia @100 have Financial Freedom?   On 28th October, the Good Financial Governance Programme together with the University of Zambia hosted a Transformation Talk under the theme of 60 Years of Independence: how can Zambia attain financial freedom? The occasion was well attended with students from the University of Zambia and participants from civil society, development partners and government officials. The Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, @Professor Jacob Malungo, and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mundia Muya gave the opening remarks. In an insightful keynote address, Mr James Kema, the GFG Fiscal Decentralisation Advisor, highlighted how Zambia’s key economic trends and government reforms from the time of independence to the present day reinforced current challenges. The distinguished panel, which was moderated by Dr. Barbara Dutzler, the Head of the GFG Programme, consisted of Cecilia Zimba, Andrew Chibuye and Mwaipopo Isaac. Key insights to emerge from the discussion included the need for greater policy consistency. It further highlighted that more needed to be done to educate taxpayers and to communicate how taxes are spent, so as to enhance domestic resource mobilization. The panel called for institutions, such as the Office of the Accountant General and oversight committees, to be strengthened in a bid to curb corruption and the abuse of public funds. The panel also made a plea to the captivated audience to engage with and hold their leaders accountable for implementing strategic plans, such as the Annual Borrowing Plan that has been put in place to ensure financial sustainability as part of Zambia’s recent debt restructuring agreement. In closing, EU Head of Delegation Claudio Bacigalupi emphasized the need both to communicate the benefits and uses of public funds and to simplify financial terminologies, so that the average Zambian can better understand government finances. #Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) #European Union in Zambia #USAID/Zambia #TeamEurope #UNZA
