I’ve recently had an amazing few days in Morocco, talking about rewiring businesses and exploring the future of sustainable software engineering as part of the SoCraTes event, of which McKinsey was a knowledge partner. SoCraTes gathered participants from Morocco, France and Germany, and my colleagues Sallah Kokaina and Guillaume Lurenbaum hosted a gen AI-assisted refactoring hackaton. It was incredible to see how gen AI optimized processes and enhanced code quality. I also took part in a roundtable discussion in Casablanca focusing on cloud transformation, technological resilience, and using gen AI to boost engineering productivity. It was a pleasure to speak alongside colleagues and peers including Sallah and Guillaume, as well as Arnaud Tournesac, Lucy Shenton, Umar Bagus, Othmane Ouardi, and Anass Bensrhir. Sometimes, a manufacturing site requires more than a patch-up job—it needs a shock to the system to bring it back to life. Three primary markers indicate the need for specific interventions: 1️⃣ Ongoing challenges with safety, quality, and compliance 2️⃣ Consistently low, variable, and unpredictable performance 3️⃣ High direct labor costs, stress, absenteeism, and employee turnover A consumer products factory in Africa showed many of these signs, struggling not only with repeated failure to meet delivery targets but also with low and inconsistent quality and high waste levels—factors that posed health and safety risks. Multiple attempts had been made to turn around operations, under a variety of well-tested approaches, but none offered any sustained benefits—the owner of the plant had to shock the system to bring it back to life.
