The Observatory of Racial Discrimination in Football released the tenth edition of the document that records occurrences of racism in the sport.
According to the Racial Discrimination in Football Report, 136 cases were recorded in Brazil in 2023, an increase of 38.8% compared to the previous season, which had 98 incidents reported.
Thus, the trend of growth observed since 2016 has continued –with the exception of 2020, due to the Covid pandemic, with empty stadiums.
"If we have more reports, it’s because Brazilian society is more aware of what racism is and its various forms of expression," said the founder and executive director of the Observatory, Marcelo Carvalho.
The report was presented at the Brazilian Football Confederation, whose president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, promised efforts in the search for solutions.
"The increase in reported cases reinforces the seriousness of the problem and the persistent challenges, which call for innovative, effective, and continuous actions to break the historical passivity and complicity with racism."
