Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a systemic process that identifies, predicts, and evaluates potential positive and negative impacts that a proposed project may have on the environment in its totality that is physical, biological, and socio-economic aspects.

Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) formerly the Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) has the mandate to do all such things as are necessary to ensure the sustainable management of natural resources and protection of the environment, prevention and control of pollution.
The EMA provides for the continued focus on Environmental Management with the inclusion of new and emerging issues such as climate change, pollution from Persistent Organic Pollutants, and electronic waste.
