India proposes 12% safeguard duty on imported steel products

India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended a 12% temporary safeguard duty on some imported steel products for 200 days to protect domestic manufacturers.

The measure, aimed at countering a surge in imports, includes hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils and sheets, galvanized steel, and color-coated steel products.

DGTR stated that the duty is necessary to prevent serious harm to local producers. Public comments will be accepted for 30 days before a final decision is made.

The investigation began in December after domestic steelmakers requested a 25% safeguard duty on imports to curb the impact of rising foreign steel inflows.
