How to Change Your Instagram Username

How to Change Your Instagram Username

Instagram usernames tend to go in and out of style. Unless you chose your actual name as your username, you may find yourself wanting a change — whether it be for something more professional, you changed your real-life name, or something more trivial. As much as you appreciate Harry Styles as the artist he is, onedirectiongirl123 may not be your vibe at this point in your life, and that's totally fine. If you aren't feeling your Instagram username anymore, don't worry, there's a way out.

While other social media platforms limit the number of times you can change your username, Instagram doesn't. You're free to switch things up as often as you'd like.

You can find your username at the top of your profile and at the end of your profile's URL. Just so there's no confusion, your username and your display name are two different things. Your display name can be anything you want (it doesn't have to be you name, and it doesn't have to be unique to you). Your username has to be unique to you, meaning it can't already be taken. There are some other restrictions as well. It can't be longer than 30 characters and it can only contain letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.

How to change your username via the Instagram app

  1. Log in to your Instagram account.
  2. Tap the icon in the bottom right corner to go to your profile.
  3. Under your bio, tap Edit Profile.
  4. Tap Username, delete your current username and type in your new one.
  5. Tap Done.

How to change your name on a desktop

  1. Open your web browser and go to Instagram.com.
  2. Log in to your account if you aren't already.
  3. Tap your profile icon to the right of the homepage.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Next to Username, delete your current username and type in your new one.
  6. Tap Submit.

If the username you want is taken, try adding extra letters, numbers, or an underscore until you find one that works.
