It's never a bad time to back up your iPhone photos and videos to a trusty computer, especially if you're planning on upgrading to a new iPhone soon.
The most efficient way to keep your files safe is to use iCloud, which automatically and securely stores your photos and videos (among other things) and keeps them up to date across all of your Apple devices.
If you prefer to import your photos to a computer (either in addition to or instead of iCloud), you can find the steps to do it below.
How to transfer photos to Mac
- Using a USB cable, connect your iPhone to your Mac. You can also transfer photos and videos from an iPad or iPod Touch.
- Open the Photos app on your computer and an Import screen with all the photos and videos on your connected device should appear. If the Import screen doesn't automatically appear, click the device's name in the Photos sidebar.
- If prompted to unlock your iOS or iPadOS device, type in your passcode. Click Trust This Computer if asked.
- Choose where you want to import your photos. Next to "Import to," you can choose an existing album or create a new one.
- Select the photos you want to import and click Import Selected or Import All New Photos.
- Wait for the photos to upload then disconnect your device.
How to transfer photos to Windows PC
- If you haven't already, download the latest version of iTunes on your PC. (It needs to be iTunes 12.5.1 or later.)
- Use a USB cable to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your PC.
- If asked, unlock your iOS or iPadOS device using your passcode.
- If you see a prompt on your iOS or iPadOS device asking you to Trust This Computer, tap Trust or Allow to continue. (If you have iCloud Photos turned on, download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone before you import to your PC.)
- On your PC, tap the Start button and then select Photos to open the Photos app.
- Tap Import > From a USB device, then follow the instructions. You can choose which photos and videos to import and where to save them.
