How to Unpair and Erase Your Apple Watch

There are several reasons why you'd want to to unpair or erase your Apple Watch. Maybe you're gifting it to your kid, maybe you're selling it, or maybe there's an issue that requires you to reset it. Either way, it's quick and easy to do.

How to unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone.

  1. With your Apple Watch and iPhone next to each other, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to the My Watch tab and tap All Watches.
  3. Tap the info button next to the watch that you want to unpair.
  4. Select Unpair Apple Watch.
  5. For GPS + Cellular models, choose whether you want to keep or remove your cellular plan.
    • If you plan on pairing your Apple Watch and iPhone again, keep your plan.
    • If you're getting rid of your watch, remove your plan. If you aren't going to pair with a different watch or iPhone, you might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.
  6. Tap to confirm. If Activation Lock appears, you'll need to disable it by entering your Apple ID password. Before erasing all content and settings on your Apple Watch, your iPhone saves a backup, which can be used to restore a new Apple Watch.

How to erase your Apple Watch without using your iPhone

  1. On your Apple Watch, tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Enter your password if prompted.
  3. For GPS + Cellular models, select whether you want to keep your cellular plan or remove it.
    • If you plan to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, keep your plan.
    • If you don't want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, select the option to remove your plan. If you aren't going to pair with a different watch or iPhone, you might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.
  4. Tap Erase All to reset your Apple Watch to the factory settings.
