Described below is an error message that countless Windows Live Mail users have run into and continue to be met with when trying to send messages from or check for messages received by their Hotmail account. Thankfully, though, this issue has been around long enough for us to know exactly what causes it – if your Hotmail account is configured to automatically use HTTPS for all connections, Windows Live Mail will not be able to sync with your Hotmail account and you will receive the error message described above every time you try to send a message from or retrieve messages sent to your Hotmail account.
Unable to send or receive messages for the [Name of account] account. To get help from Windows Live Customer Support, go to https://support.live.com and click Windows Live Mail in the list of services.

Server Response: HTTPS is turned on for the web but not for this program

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8DE00005
Since we know what causes this problem, though, we also know how to resolve it. This issue can be fixed by simply configuring your Hotmail account to not automatically use HTTPS for all connections. In order to do so, you need to:
- Log in to your Hotmail account on the web using an internet browser.
- Click on Options
- Click on More Options.
- Click on Account details under Managing your account.
- If you are asked to provide your password, type it in. If you are not asked to provide your password, simply skip this step.
- Under Other options, click on Connect with HTTPS and disable the automatic option.
- If required to do so, save the changes.
- Restart your computer.
For the fix to take effect, you are going to have to re-sync Windows Live Mail with your Hotmail account, so when your computer boots up, launch Windows Live Mail and click on the Send/Receive button to re-sync. Once Windows Live Mail has re-synced with your Hotmail account, the problem should be resolved and your ability to send and receive emails on your Hotmail account via Windows Live Mail should be restored. If the problem is not resolved with the above method, then proceed with the instructions given in Method 2 below
To fix this issue you will need to reconfigure your account.
- To re-configure your account – Click the Accounts Tab and Click the + symbol with the @ sign.
- Type your e-mail address, password and display name.
- Place a check on “Manually Configure Server Settings”
- Under “Incoming Server Information” select “IMAP” as server type.
- In the Server Address field, type imap-mail.outlook.com and in port type 993
- Place a check on “Requires a secure connection SSL”
- Under “Outgoing Server Information” type smtp-mail.outlook.com as server address and in port type 587
- Place a check on “Requires a secure connection SSL” and “Requires Authentication”
- Click Next. And you’re done, you should now see a new account added in the left pane of your Windows Live Mail.
If you wish to move messages from the previously added account, you can drag messages and drop them to the appropriate folders.
All Your messages will be re-downloaded, except for Sent Messages which you can drag and drop.
After your account is setup, you can remove the previous account by right clicking on it and selecting “Remove Account“
