Wikidata:WikiProject BeyondNotability
WikiProject Beyond Notability is the community project for improving content on Wikidata women's work in archaeology, history and heritage in the UK circa 1870-1950. The project builds on the Beyond Notability project and uses its Wikibase as a source of biographical information.
Regular participants in this project are team members, but everyone is welcome here! Anyone with questions about accessing Wikidata content, or who has LGBT+ data to share, or who wishes to discuss or propose changes may do so on the discussion page.
How to participate

2023 International Women's Day Edit-A-Thon
[edit]- Sign up here for our International Women’s Day Edit-A-Thon (10:00 UTC, 8 March 2023).

- Choose a woman (or women) to work on!
We have a number of different routes into our data, as we explained in a recent post on our blog If you are a resident of London, you might be interested in women who lived in your area of London.
- Women in London N
- Women in London NW
- Women in London SE
- Women in London SW
- Women in London WC
- Women in London W
- Women in London EC
Or, you might be interested in women who were associated with the Folklore Society
We have a list of women who were exhibiting and another one for women who were freelance lecturers
We also have 11 women who excavated at Colchester in the 1930s!
Click on an item or property in our database that you're interested in, and once you get to the entry for the item or property click "What Links Here" on the right hand side of the screen to see which women are linked to the item you've selected. Happy editing!
How can I help?
[edit]- Create Wikidata entries for women included in Beyond Notability's database with statements for key identifiers: WorldCat, ADS ID, BM Person ID, for e. g. Ethel Ann Burton-Brown. See WikiProject BeyondNotability/Identifiers we have written queries that compare the two knowledge bases to show what needs attention.
- Augment Wikidata entries for women included in Beyond Notability's database where they already exist for e. g. Marie Brown, with statements using key Wikidata properties:
- Create Wikidata entries for key reference texts, where they do not exist so that these can be included as references.
- Create Wikidata entries for key works to which women contributed, and add them as authors or editors as appropriate.
Projects
[edit]Victoria County History
[edit]In December 2022, we collaborated with the Victoria County History project and the Women's Classical Committee to organise a Wiki editathon that focused on women contributors to the Victoria County History project. You can find out more about these VCH women (and create/edit Wikidata entries for them) on our project blog post Women of the VCH Wiki edit-a-thon
Recognising Achievement
[edit]- Ensure that women are listed as Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries of London, where they are listed as such on Beyond Notability.
- See WikiProject BeyondNotability/Identifiers we have written queries that compare the two knowledge bases to show what needs attention.

Checking identifiers
[edit]- Improve the quality of entries for women on wikidata by adding VIAF, ISNI, and Archaeology Data Service identifiers (using this query as a guide).
Data modelling
[edit]- The Beyond Notability wikibase has developed an ontology for representing women's work in archaeology, history and heritage in the UK circa 1870-1950, to showcase the variety of work done by women that is not attached to employment or profession. Some of these are worth consideration for use of Wikidata. These include:
- member of excavation during archaeological field work, a property used to identify the work of taking part in an archaeological excavation but not in the role of overall director
- spoke at, a property used to identify the work of preparing and delivering research for public presentation at meetings of learned societies and large national and international conferences, a mark of the significance of a person's research
- exhibited at, a property used to identify the work of presenting materials at meetings or participation in artistic culture through the preparation and acceptance of creative works for display at key venues
- The project models excavations as organisations, examples of which are Excavations at Colchester and Excavations at Saqqara 1
Connecting Families
[edit]- Adding women's entries to entries for their husbands, fathers, mother, and children, where listed on Beyond Notability.
