Aim and Scope
[edit]The Harvard Kennedy School has a collection of political buttons related to candidates, ballot initiatives, social issues, grassroots movements, and more. There are 2800+ buttons in the collection, dating to the period roughly from 1904 to the present day. The buttons have been photographed and the images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The goal of the HKS Political Buttons Editathon is to add structured data to the Wikimedia Commons entries and create or enhance related Wikidata items rendering the button images discoverable to researchers. complete the Wikimedia entries for the buttons with appropriate feature characterizations and metadata, to facilitate users' ability to find the entries for the buttons using various search criteria and to do further research on the buttons' history and significance.
To that end, the sections below provide further information about the Collection and instructions for creating entries (in case it is determined that there are buttons in the Collection whose images have not yet been uploaded) and for updating entries by filling in the appropriate fields. It is anticipated that the bulk of activity for this project will consist of updating entries rather than creating new entries. The editing of entries will be done primarily by personnel from the Harvard Kennedy School, with assistance as needed by personnel from Harvard's Metadata Management team.
The updated Wikimedia entries for the HKS Buttons database [replace with correct name] will be accessible to the public and thus may serve as a resource for researchers investigating such topics as the movement for LGBTQ rights, the overall history of political buttons in the United States, or specific political campaigns associated with the buttons. To that end, our overarching goal is to ensure that sufficient information has been added to the entries to make it possible for researchers to find the relevant images and to make appropriate connections between the images and related materials.
About the Harvard Kennedy School political button collection
[edit]The Harvard Kennedy School maintains a number of archives and collections focusing on the history of politics and political campaigns in the United States. The HKS collection [insert correct name] was assembled by ____ and comprises ### items. Its assembly reflects HKS's overall commitment to archiving and documenting the history of [gay rights? political campaigns? the history of civil rights struggles in the US? the history of contentious political issues in the US?] Funding to maintain and document the collection is provided by ___ [HKS?] The collection is overseen by [HKS administration?] The buttons were photographed and images uploaded by [HKS staff?]. Some information concerning each button has been entered into Wikimedia Commons already.
Goals of the Editathon
[edit]• Ensure that all images of political buttons in the HKS collection are tagged with appropriate labels and metadata. • Create links as appropriate to additional entries pertaining to individuals and organizations depicted in, or connected with, the buttons. • Ensure, insofar as possible, that the button collection is discoverable and searchable by researchers from outside the Harvard Kennedy School in order to facilitate research and scholarly dialogue.
Why contribute to Wikidata?
[edit]Wikidata is open linked data
[edit]Wikidata is an open linked data repository of information that enriches the data in sister projects, such as Wikimedia Commons and all language versions of Wikipedia. This greatly improves access to information and the consistency of data across language platforms. Additionally, Wikidata content is under a Creative Commons CC0 license, placing all of the data and data structures in Wikidata unreservedly in the public domain. The data can be added to, edited, and reused by anyone. Researchers can use open data in their projects; they can visualize and represent data in different ways. Another great benefit to having centralized open linked data is that it breaks down the barriers between disparate information repositories and resources.
Wikidata increases equitable creation of data and access to information
[edit]Wikidata democratizes the act of knowledge creation by enabling the cooperative production of open data. This empowers all people to be contributors to knowledge on a free, global, and language-agnostic platform. For libraries and archives, it allows us to share the breadth of data from our collections, including bringing to light entire sets of data, from content created by and representative of marginalized and underrepresented groups. Once the data from collections are in Wikidata, specific information and the relationship between different types of information can be discovered in creative ways using the Wikidata query service. The results of queries can also be represented via visualizations (for example, a map of HBCUs in Wikidata).
Wikidata demonstrates the interconnectedness of information
[edit]All of the items in Wikidata (people, organizations, concepts, etc.) are described by structured data that is human and machine readable. Instead of the paragraphs of free text that we find in Wikipedia articles, Wikidata items are described by data points in structured statements. The people and organizations represented in the BTA are not just isolated names in the pages of a collection; they exist as identities in a broader real world context. Contributing BTA data to an open platform like Wikidata increases the web of all knowledge, allowing us to see the myriad linkages between people, organizations, places, works, and a vast world of related data.

Wikidata Items to Create
[edit]Participants should use this workbook of organization and personal names from the BTA. These are names that need Wikidata item creation or (if they already exist in Wikidata), enhancement with additional statements. Please indicate that a name has been worked on by adding the item's Q number and any notes or questions that come up.
Describing Organizations
[edit]This project involves issues of identity, including marginalized identities, and may involve language and terminology participants find challenging or problematic. Phrases such as "Colored Teachers Associations" are used for historical reasons to reflect the identities of these organizations and figures as they defined themselves at the time. By accurately recording the historical names of organizations (and also tracing the history of name changes), we choose not to engage in erasure, but to better represent the data of the BTA within its historical context.
Essential properties
[edit]Property | Value | Usage note | Add reference? |
---|---|---|---|
instance of (P31) | professional association (Q829080) | This is required by Wikidata, and should be the first statement added to a new item. | no |
country (P17) | United States of America (Q30) | no | |
located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) | name of state | yes (use the BTA CURIOSity site, which has pages for the state associations) | |
has works in the collection (P6379) | Black Teacher Archive (Q123909278) | This statement can be applied to the teachers associations since their serial publications are collected in the BTA. | yes (use the BTA CURIOSity site, which has pages for the state associations) |
on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) | Black Teacher Archive Wikidata Project (Q126195971) | This exists for tracking purposes. It is essentially administrative metadata that indicates the item was created or edited as part of this project, which gives us the ability to create lists and reports. | no |
Additional properties
[edit]It is always good practice to add references for any added statements.
The column header Value may be new entity? means "Might I need to create another Wikidata item to use this property, or should all the items I would need exist already?" For example, the value for parent organization (P749) may need to refer to an organization that isn't yet represented in Wikidata, so it is marked "yes".
Property | Value | Value may be new entity? | Usage note |
---|---|---|---|
field of work (P101) | education (Q8434) | no | |
inception (P571) | date or year | no | |
dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) | date or year | no | |
founded by (P112) | name of person | yes | |
follows (P155) | preceding name of organization, if applicable | yes | |
followed by (P156) | succeeding name of organization, if applicable | yes | |
parent organization (P749) | name of parent organization, if applicable | yes | |
merged into (P7888) | name of organization that the subject organization was dissolved and merged into | yes | |
identifiers (see table below for specific properties) | (see table below for lookups) | NA | Add identifiers, if available. This is helpful for disambiguation, especially when there are few other statements about an item, and may also help to establish the item's notability. The table below contains a non-exhaustive list of common identifiers and their lookups. |
Describing People

[edit]Property | Value | Usage note | Add reference? |
---|---|---|---|
instance of (P31) | human (Q5) | This is required by Wikidata, and should be the first statement added to a new item. | no |
occupation (P106) | educator (Q974144), teacher (Q37226) or other values as appropriate | A person can have multiple occupation statements. | yes (use the BTA CURIOSity site, which has lists of association presidents on the CTA state pages, and also search the BTA portal to see other positions, and sometimes biographical information) |
member of (P463) | name of organization | The teachers association (once the Wikidata item has been created) can be used as a value here. | yes (use the BTA CURIOSity site, which has lists of association presidents on the CTA state pages, and also search the BTA portal to see other affiliations, and sometimes biographical information) |
position held (P39) | position held | president (Q1255921), secretary (Q319544), or other position within an organization. You must add a qualifier for organization directed by the office or position (P2389) — the teachers association (once the Wikidata item has been created) can be used as a value here. | yes (use the BTA CURIOSity site, which has lists of association presidents on the CTA state pages, and also search the BTA portal to see other affiliations, and sometimes biographical information) |

Additional properties
[edit]Please familiarize yourself with Wikidata's guidelines concerning description of living people and err on the side of respecting privacy.
It is always good practice to add references for any added statements.
The column header Value may be new entity? means "Might I need to create another Wikidata item to use this property, or should all the items I would need exist already?" For example, values for country of citizenship (P27) should be existing countries, so it is marked "no". Whereas affiliation (P1416) may need to refer to an organization that isn't yet represented in Wikidata, so it is marked "yes".
Property | Value | Value may be new entity? | Usage note |
---|---|---|---|
date of birth (P569) | date or year | no | |
date of death (P570) | date or year | no | |
place of birth (P19) | most specific place known (e.g. city instead of country) | no | |
place of death (P20) | most specific place known (e.g. city instead of country) | no | |

Prefer values that reflect self-identification (such as a statement in an interview), if available. | no | Do not add without a referenceable source. Note that a membership or leadership position in a Colored Teachers Association is not, by itself, an unambiguous indication of race. When in doubt, set aside for discussion and/or add a note to the spreadsheet. |

work location (P937) | most specific place known (e.g. city instead of country) | no | |
academic degree (P512) | type of degree | no | |
affiliation (P1416) | name of organization | yes | |

Identifiers
[edit]Organization and personal names may be found in external systems such as databases and authority files; they will have unique, persistent identifiers within these systems. Some examples of common identifiers that you may be familiar with are ISBNs for books and ORCID iDs for researchers. Whenever you can find identifiers for the names you are working on, you should add them to their Wikidata items, so that each item is associated to external database records that represent the same entity.

---|---|---|---|
Library of Congress authority ID (P244) | Library of Congress Name Authority File lookup | Value is identifier string that starts with "n" (last part of URI) | no |
ISNI (P213) | ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) lookup | Value is identifier string that starts with zeroes (enter without spaces) | no |
VIAF ID (P214) | VIAF (Virtual International Authority File) lookup | Value is the stated "VIAF ID" (numerical string) | no |
WorldCat Entities ID (P10832) | WorldCat Entities ID lookup | Value is identifier string that starts with "E" (last part of URI) | no |
Resources
[edit]When searching for information about associations and people of the BTA, the first place to look is the BTA CURIOSity site. Then, try doing a full text search of the BTA materials. Newspapers are also a great source of biographical information. And, of course, you can try googling for information—just be mindful of the quality of the web sources you find.
