The real ghosts at this exhibition are the German collectors, one of whom, a producer of steam boilers named Otto Krebs, owned 56 of the 74 paintings on exhibit. Mr. Krebs, who bought what he liked, had a superb eye and no taste for publicity. Born in Wiesbaden in 1873, he hung his pictures in his large house in the little village of Holzdorf, near Weimar. He did not exhibit them, display them or have them photographed. His collection, mostly bought in the 1920's, was considered "degenerate art" by the Nazis (English)
