A Naval Biographical Dictionary (NBD) is a resource included at English language Wikisource (enwikisource). Its 5000 entries and lists have been transcribed at Wikisource.

All pages are available at wikisource:Special:PrefixIndex/A_Naval_Biographical_Dictionary/ and wikisource:Category:A Naval Biographical Dictionary

This draft outlines how to import and cross-reference them at Wikidata.

It's partially based on Wikidata:WikiProject DNB and Help:Import Template:Bio from itwiki. Some discussion was at Wikidata:Project_chat#Entries_from_A_Naval_Biographical_Dictionary.

field mapping Fields mapping

values mapping Values mapping

Which value to use for instance of (P31)? Which items to use? Which properties to use? Which values for these properties?

Most entries will have instance of (P31) = biographical article (Q19389637).

Exceptions include .. (lists of appointments)

New items need to be created for each article. This is done by PetScan.

see #Sample

For naval ranks, there is the property military or police rank (P410)

  • This is mainly done by QuickStatements (Q20084080) (conversion of Wikipedia article titles to QIDs)
  • Naval ranks, if added, would need manual mapping (rank > item for rank).
  • Most dates will be Gregorian (adopted 1752 for GB)
