The Witcher 3: Spooked Mare walkthrough

The old grey mare she ain't what she used to be.

This The Witcher 3 quest, Spooked Mare, sees Geralt dealing with just that. A peasant has been having his horses stolen and requests the help of the one and only Geralt with tracking them down, and you can reap some half-decent rewards by completing this quest and bringing back a horse to the peasant.

And these horses aren't being stolen by who you first think, either, which is often the case when things go walkabouts in The Witcher 3... Without further ado, here's how to complete the Spooked Mare quest in The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3: Spooked Mare walkthrough

To kick off the Spooked Mare quest in The Witcher 3, follow the river bank north from the Crossroads signpost (southeast of Oxenfurt's east gate) to reach a small village. Here, a peasant claims a woodland spook made off with his grey mare. Agree to find it for him.

Use your Witcher Senses to track the horse's hoofprints, crossing the water when necessary. As you move uphill and into the forest, you may have to battle a few wolves.

At the end of the trail, you do not find a beast, but a pack of Scoia'tael, who have stolen the horses to help move their wounded.

There are four options here: using Axii level two will get you the horse back, as will spending 100 Crowns. Otherwise, you'll have to battle the Scoia'tael, or fail the quest by agreeing they need the horses more than the peasants.

If you manage to get the horse back, approach it in the pen and ride it back to the peasant. You want to take the grey one, but any horse except Roach will be welcome and score you a reward. In fact, taking the peasant a different horse is a good thing, and the peasant will reward you extra Crowns for bringing him a younger, better horse.
