Henry Hutchinson, 40, of Trenton, received a 50-year prison sentence for shooting a man in July 2022. The victim became a paraplegic due to his injuries.

Mercer County Superior Court Judge Peter E. Warshaw delivered the sentence on December 4. Under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act, Hutchinson must serve 85 percent of his term before parole eligibility.

A jury convicted Hutchinson on September 25, 2024, of attempted murder, weapons charges, and illegal firearm possession. The jury identified him as a repeat offender under New Jersey’s “Three Strikes Law.”

The shooting occurred on July 16, 2022, at 11 p.m. on Chambers Street. Hutchinson shot the victim twice, then fired a third shot while standing over him. Police arrested Hutchinson two days later and recovered a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver linked to the crime.

“The jury delivered a clear and decisive verdict, and the judge’s sentence ensures accountability for the crime — a result that both the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the victim find just and appropriate,” said Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey C. McElwee Jr., who presented the state’s case alongside Michael J. Mennuti during the two-week trial.

The Mercer County Shooting Response Team and Trenton Police Detective Kevin Williams conducted the investigation. Louis Mangione served as defense counsel.
