Los Angeles: Israel is "furious" with The Zone of Interest's director Jonathan Glazer. During his acceptance speech at the Oscars 2024, Glazer won loud cheers and applause for decreeing the Israel-Hamas war.
Taking his award for best international film, Glazer shared how his film shows "where dehumanisation leads at its worst".
“Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack in Gaza," stated Glazer.
Israel, however, was left furious after Glazer's statement. Taking to social media platform X, Israel's War Room shared a tweet "calling out" the Zone of Interest Director.
"DISGUSTING #Oscars speech from Jonathan Glazer blaming Israel — the VICTIM — for the October 7 massacre," stated the war room.
"In the 1940s, the dehumanization of Jews led to the systematic mass murder of 6 million. In 2023, that same Jew hatred led to the mass murder of 1,200. It would have been many more if the Jewish State couldn't or didn't fight back," the tweet added further.
The Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian militant group launched a terror attack in southern Israel, killing around 1,200 and taking 250 people as hostages. In response, Israel launched a massive air and land operation against Gaza, which has killed nearly 31,000 people.
During the Oscars, not only did a massive protest outside the Dolby Theatre take place, but several movie stars and celebrities were spotted wearing red pins. This red pin represented the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Singer Billie Eilish, Mark Ruffalo, Emma Stone and many more were spotted donning this red pin.
