The Lands Department has resumed 632 private sites in Tung Chung for the development of public infrastructure, according to a notice issued yesterday.

The total area of the sites stood at about 65,100 square meters, the department said.

The land will revert to the government in three months, namely on October 26, after the notice is posted, it said.

The government will maintain close liaison with the relevant landowners and affected parties, and properly handle their compensation matters, it noted.

The infrastructure works will provide public facilities and serve the anticipated traffic demand under the development of the Tung Chung New Town Extension project, the Lands Department said. The department added that sewerage works will improve the sanitary conditions in Tung Chung West.

The work is expected to be completed in stages in around six years.

This came as Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said yesterday that the failure of the first tender in Chai Wan under a pilot scheme to get private developers to build subsidized flats is believed to be related to the high-interest-rate environment.

The bid for the residential site on Cheung Man Road was rejected as the tendered premium by the sole bidder did not meet the government's reserve price.
