Three-time Paralympian Ho Yuen-kei, who represented Hong Kong in the Boccia Team, has claimed that a Causeway Bay restaurant refused her entry as there was “no space for her wheelchair.”

Ho, sharing her story on Threads Tuesday night, said she visited the Thai restaurant “Ayutthaya” and was told by restaurant staff that her “wheelchair would block other patrons.”

She noted that she was still denied entry after emphasizing that her wheelchair was small enough to fit the tables.

“With such customer service, no wonder people were no longer spending in Hong Kong,” she wrote.

In a response to a media inquiry, the restaurant management, Ng, has apologized for the incident and said it could be a misunderstanding, adding that the restaurant welcomes wheelchair users at all times.

He explained that restaurant staffers that day found that the wheelchair could possibly obstruct the aisle, with a risk of accidentally spilling food during delivery, potentially causing injuries to the customers - including Ho.

However, he acknowledged that the behavior of the staffers was inappropriate.

They should first allow Ho to enter the shop to see whether her wheelchair would fit, he said, adding he would reach out to Ho to clarify the incident.
