Police have named the headmaster of Pondok Pesantren Sri Muslim Mardhatillah, reportedly an unlicensed Islamic boarding school in Jambi city, as a suspect of sexual abuse involving at least 12 students.
ambi Police have arrested the headmaster of a local pesantren over allegations that he sexually abused 12 students for the past two years, while other authorities have stated that the Islamic boarding school does not have the proper licenses to operate.
The suspect has been named as Aprizal Wahyudi Diprata, 28, the headmaster of Pondok Pesantren Sri Muslim Mardhatillah.
The case unfolded when one student contacted their family on May 1 and asked to be picked up from the school because they felt sick.
A subsequent examination at a Puskesmas (community health center) found signs that the student had been sexually abused.
“The suspect is the headmaster of the pesantren, who abused his students. The case is still under investigation,” the Jambi Police’s criminal investigation deputy director Adj. Sr. Comr. Imam Rachman said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Aprizal has been charged with Article 81 of the 2014 Child Protection Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.
Separately, Jambi city’s Religious Affairs Office said Aprizal’s pesantren was not licensed to operate as a religious education institution.
