US state proposes hotel 'panic button' bill to protect housekeepers from assaults.

A California bill was introduced on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, that requires hotels to provide hotel room cleaners with panic buttons, according to US media reports.

CNBC reports that if the bill is passed, California will be the first to have a statewide law mandating hotels to have the panic button.

HotelierMiddleEast.com recently reported that advocates for hotel workers have been pushing hotels to equip housekeeping staff with panic buttons to ensure their safety from harassment from guests.

The California bill is also looking to impose a three-year ban for any guest accused of violence or sexual harassment against an employee. Furthermore, it also wants hotels to keep a list of those accusations for five years.

The bill was introduced jointly by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance with Assemblyman Bill Quirk, D-Hayward.
