The aim of such testing is to reveal an early state of genetic disorders such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome),
trisomy 18 (Edward syndrome), trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), and monosomy X (Turner syndrome).
The James Julian Ashe Memorial Scholarship was created by Western North Carolina residents Jim Ashe, a WGU faculty member, and his wife Catherine in memory of their son James who was born with an uncommon chromosomal disorder called
Trisomy 18. James was lovingly cared for by family members and nurses during his brief life of five months.
Olivia has also been diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder called Partial
Trisomy 18, which can also cause developmental delays.
Brooke Wallace, 20, and her fiance Kyle Smith, 22, were given the devastating news that their baby had
Trisomy 18, otherwise known as Edwards Syndrome.
The positive predictive value in this cohort was 95.2% for trisomy 21, 93.5% for
trisomy 18, 77.9% for trisomy 13, and 86.7% for monosomy X.
And it has been found more frequently in infants with Patau syndrome (trisomy 13 with a Robertsonian translocation) (Aziz, 1980) and Edward syndrome (
trisomy 18) at autopsy (Bersu & Ramirez-Castro, 1977).
The mum and her husband Kerem discovered that their unborn baby had Edwards syndrome, otherwise known as
trisomy 18 .
| Also known as
trisomy 18, it is a rare genetic condition that causes a range of severe medical problems | Most babies who have it will die before or shortly after birth | Each cell normally contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, but a baby with Edwards' syndrome has three copies of chromosome 18, severely disrupting normal development | There is no cure | The condition is usually picked up during pregnancy screening
No doctor testified that labelling infants with
trisomy 18 as 'lethal' is inaccurate and steeped in disability bias."
This may be particularly true in cases of double trisomy X and 18, in which fetal features are dominated by those related to
trisomy 18 [3] and those of trisomy X may be overlooked.
