Temperature ([degrees]C) and salinity were recorded with a thermos salinometer (YSI 30) at each depth level.
On board the ships, salinity (dimensionless) was measured using an Autolab salinometer with a precision of [+ or -]0.003.
The salinity of the samples was recorded using Salinometer (Salt Testr).
For each discrete water sample, TDIC was measured using a 5011 C[0.sub.2] coulometer (UIC Inc.); TA was measured by open-cell potentiometric titration; and salinity was measured with a Guildline Autosal salinometer. Using the TDIC, TA, salinity, and temperature data for each sampled time point, we calculated aragonite saturation and pH via the program SeaCarb ver.
Those bottles, marked with the date of collection, are routinely collected and brought back to CSIRNIO headquarters in Goa, where the salinity of each sample is then measured using a salinometer.
The apparatus used in this research work included glass tools which are generally used in the laboratory, jars made of cover glass, aerator, salinometer, centrifuge, haemocytometer, Japan Nikon microscopes SE model type 102, Olympus microscope SZX16, desiccators, pumps vacuum, Buchner funnel, water bath, water bath, Butchi rotary evaporator, blower, Oswald viscometer, burette 50 mL Pyrex, analytical balance, and ultrasonic equipment S 40 H Elmasonic.
These samples were analysed for temperature (with a high precision mercury thermometer), salinity (using a calibrated salinometer), pH (with Pocket pH Tester, Eutech) and dissolved oxygen by Winkler's method [25].
Water temperature and salinity were measured every month at the point of collection using a thermometer with 0.01[degrees]C accuracy and a salinometer (type WTW.LF 191), respectively.
Analytical errors are as follows: temperature (reversing thermometer): [+ or -] 0.02[degrees]C; salinity (bench salinometer): [+ or -] 0.001 psu; dissolved oxygen (Winkler): mean of n determinations, [+ or -] (0.003 mg-at [o.sub.2] * [1.sup.-1])/[square root of (term)]n, which converts to [+ or -] 0.023 ml [o.sub.2] * [1.sup.-1]; dissolved inorganic nutrients: mean of n determinations, [+ or -] 0.03 [mu]M/[square root of (term)]n, or [+ or -] 0.021 [mu]M.
Salinity was measured with a Beckman salinometer and temperature with an immersion thermometer.
SSTs were recorded with a bucket thermometer, and the salinity of a sample of water taken just below the surface was measured with a handheld salinometer. Visual observations of environmental conditions (e.g., wind, currents, and weather) were recorded at the time of sampling.
