Model Parliament

Another highlight of the course would be the enactment of a Model Parliament chaired by Speaker of one of the State Assemblies thus providing participants to emulate the proceedings of the parliament.

This was done in 1295 with the Model Parliament, in France in 1302 with the Estates General, in Spain in 1476 with the Cortes de Madrigal, in Germany with the 1495 Reichstag, in Russia with the 1549 Zemski Sobor.

A few months later, I got to participate in a Model Parliament, and actually got to sit in those green chairs and participate in my own Question Period!

A THE first holder of this ancient title was Roger le Strange who was summoned before the Model Parliament as Lord Strange by King Edward 1 in 1295, hence the name.

LANCASHIRE Day - November 27 - commemorates the date in 1295 when the first elected representatives from Lancashire were summoned to Westminster by King Edward I to join his Model Parliament. This was a great step towards establishing democracy in the country.

In 1295 Edward I sent writs of summons to 70 abbots and priors, to the meeting of the 'Model Parliament', the first properly authorised parliament, though not the first parliament.

The so-called Model Parliament established in 1264 by Simon de Montfort, the Earl of Leicester, was the first attempt at spreading power beyond the grasp of a single ruler of the kingdom.

Among these are: the Model Parliament of Edward I (1295); Henry VIII's Reformation Parliament (152936); the overthrow and execution of Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-49); the English Bill of Rights (1689); The Great Reform Bill of 1832.

During the model parliament session, motions requesting a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) within the Northwest Territories and addressing the high cost of living and the establishment of community-based traditional knowledge centres were introduced, debated and adopted by the elder parliamentarians.
