Weekly Roundup 08.03.2024

Happy Sunday all,

A few weeks into the Olympics, and wowee has it lived up to expectations. A few highlights so far for me have been the watching the Malaysian women's badminton, Simone Biles dominating gymnastics, "Mr Skyball" in the beach volleyball, and lets not forget the swagger of the turkish shooter Yusuf, who has taken the internet by storm.

You know by now one of my favourite sports to watch is tennis so have loved the build up to a Alcaraz-Djokovic final. I must admit I am team Alcaraz going into Sundays play.

Sadly I missed alot of the theatrics in the rowing, triathlons, swimming and athletics - but I'm hoping the SportsVizSunday crew will have us covered on some of the Olympic highlights this week!

Kickstarting the round up this week we have Anastasiya.... wait this isnt an F1 viz???

Anastasiya turns her attention to what we consider as real sports. The number of disciplines has grown 4 fold since its start, reducing net 2 sports from the 2020 showing. Interesting to see karate be picked up then dropped, and breaking making it to the olympics for the first time ever this year. Surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding kept their place in the olympics for the second time in a row.... Does the addition of new sports boost viewership?

Rob looks at one of the greatest swimmers there is, Katie Ledecky. Winning her 13th Gold medal she sets a new US record. The chart that really makes my eyes light up is the Top 20 Fastest 1500m Times. It is a battle of Ledecky vs Ledecky at this point.

Adam shows the power of consistency and how it all adds up. His July update being one of the best yet.

A plug and play FBREF tutorial from Toby Horne this week for my personal site. It really is as simple as loading alteryx opening the file and hitting run to get some pretty amazing soccer stats at your finger tips!

Another podium finish for Dan Wade as he looks at the Belgium results in the F1. At least 15+ podium finishes each season in 6 seasons is pretty nuts. Keep up to date with Dan's 24 different projects in-line with each of the 24 races on the calendar.

Steven looks at the TDF specifically conversations at of Pogacar's career to date and whether it will reach the heights of Merckx. The running sum of achievements here shows that it will be quite the battle. I guess we will have to check back in 6 years time.

We put our hands together this week to congratulate Chris Westlake, who was honoured with a Viz Of The Day from Tableau for his piece on the legacy of Rob Burrow.

Other things I saw in the community that I liked include:

Typography has a big part to play in design, so albeit it not data visualisation I'm hoping this serves as good inspiration to those looking to invoke national pride and sporting emotion into their visuals.

World rowing show how GB were pipped at the post in the rowing.

Krisztina releases another swimming visual alongside a complimentary blog post.

Lev shows an interesting relationship between the different sports and respective average ages of the competitors.

Sportsball look at the trades in the MLB over the last 5 years.

Enjoyed this graphic from the NYT of whether we consider all medals equal or whether gold really is above and beyond silver and bronze.

& finally the digital re-enactment of the Men's 4x100M relay.

That's it for this week. Another awesome week of content. Take care,

CJ & the #SportsVizSunday team
