Biography

  • Based in Vienna, Austria, SOHN (born as Christopher Taylor) is a British musician, songwriter and music producer originally from London.

Born in South London as Christopher Taylor, SOHN initially got into music by learning how to play the guitar and piano. His first solo project, Trouble Over Tokyo, was indie elctro/ alternative music with which he released an EP and four full-length albums from 2005 to 2012. As Trouble Over Tokyo, Taylor earned himself a solid underground following, however he decided to dissolve the project altogether. He reinvented himself as SOHN and in 2012 relocated to Vienna, Austria.

In August 2010 he released his first two songs, “Warnings” and “Oscilate,” as SOHN and a month later announced the release of an EP with Aesop Label (record label). Before the release of the EP he released another two songs, “The Wheel” and “Red Lines” that received critical acclaim and boosted excitement for the upcoming EP. The EP, entitled “The Wheel” was released in November 2012 both as digital and vinyl copies.

In April SOHN signed with 4AD and released his first single “Bloodflows” around the same time. The single gained high praise with Pitchfork claiming it “a vocal showcase.” In September of the same year he released another single entitled “Lessons” online, followed by a vinyl copy release in November. SOHN also worked very closely producing other artists such as Banks, Lana Del Rey and Rhye. By April 2014 SOHN released his first full-length album, “Tremors.”

Live reviews

  • Firstly. Great crowd. Everyone was up for a good show. The vibe in the pace was really positive Those good ghost of the Fridge was smiling her peace on love on all.

At the point the Chris and his bad came and the stirring industrial ambiance came to a fade, we were all hot with anticipation. And I was hot because I had 4 layers on. SOHN's sympathy was plapable as the multi textured vocal sample-logue of Tempest aka Tourettes from Mars washed over me and my much cooler colleagues, accompanied by some gorgeous LEDs which looked like the flocked wallpaper of the bar in Tatooine.

Some have disparaged the new SOHN album "Rennen" saying Taylor's use of vocal so relevant on first effort "Tremors" has been pushed back in favour of walls of beats and sustained bass, not to the artists benefit. This listener is impressed by the bold decision to try for experimentation oversameness. Live, the wonderful silences of Rennen are brought to the fore and Taylor's falsetto becomes a instrument of some power proving that it his voice again is SOHN's main instrument even though his electronic equipment artistry is significant (Its also telling that on stage Taylor acts more as DJ than musician, presumably to maintain focus on that voice).

I was astonished at the sound quality in the Electric. A look around and one could see the more contained dynamics of the room would be prefect for this kind of electronica. But its still easy to balls it up. Kudos to Taylor and his team. A closing of the eye during highlights 'Paralysed' and 'Harbour' elicited lovely eyelid visuals to this psychonaut and at once and at any moment I was struck by how beautiful and pure the sound was throughout.

The set list was a series of "uppers and downers" as Taylor himself put it.

The singer began to enjoy himself increasingly as the set drove on, moving more assuredly to his own works which in turn game a useful dynamism to the groove he was now creating. "Rennen" is certainly blues infused..lets hope he turns to some funk for the third album...For the only thing that a SOHN show could use is a bit more hip movement.

    4 stars out of 5 ...

  • Wow. I go to shows pretty much weekly and this is my first review. I felt quite compelled to attempt to share the experience I just had last night seeing Sohn for the first time. It wasn't just a live music show...it was more of a magic show. Not only is his voice out of this world angelic and soothing, but the lighting part of his performance took it to a whole different level. Tall rods in the back synchronizing with the music and a warm yellow spotlight behind Sohn that shined on him and made him seem even more godly. I got to see it in a very small venue, which made the experience even more surreal when the show is destined to be performed for a much larger audience. So much heart and passion behind all his songs. If I were a sorority girl, I would just leave the review at "I can't even..."

This was seriously one of the best shows to I have been to in a looooong time. Please please go see him if you have a chance and then share your experience with all your friends and "pay it forward" by making them see him live too!

PS he totally would look like Jesus with long hair.

  • Sohn's performance was as solid as listening to his albums, but the Wonder Ballroom was a somewhat disappointing venue.

The lighting was nice, and the on-stage visuals were more impressive than most other shows I've been to. But early on it became apparent the space wasn't big enough for a name like Sohn.

The show was supposed to start at 8:30, and I got there 15 minutes early just to wait about 30 to 45 minutes before hearing any live music. This was a particularly annoying delay with no re-entry.

Finally, this British multi-instrumentalist William Doyle came on as the opener. He played it well as a one-man show with an electric guitar accompanied by his laptop, improvising as he went and dealing out some nice, deep, somewhat trancey riffs.

Sohn didn't come on until about 9:30. Luckily he killed it from the get-go, switching nicely between Tremors and Rennen and engulfing the entire venue with his bass-heavy style.

Maybe I was more reactive than others to the delays, because I had to drive two hours home before getting up early next morning for work.

  • About two years ago I was able to watch Sohn at a small venue in east Atlanta called "the earl" while being a relatively small and intimate show it was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. from the sharp vocals to brooding synths, everything meshed together for a perfect show. fast forward 2 years later and we get another masterpiece at terminal west. A new layer to music and show was added With the addition of new band members and key instruments. The room was filled with soft melancholic sounds that slowly turned into the unforgettable climaxes of each song. This tells us that Sohn has been working towards a more impacting live act but The most iconic moments come when he sings certain songs a capella. an Unforgettable experience to say the least. Other than the girls that were fighting because of pushing one another behind me, the show was perfection.

  • Rousing applause for....SOHN's mum and dad, broad smiles everywhere as the audience point at the slightly embarassed Mr and Mrs SOHN who stand to to receive the warm acclaim. SOHN junior played a blinder that went seriously into overdrive after the two guests, Laura Doggett and Kwabs? brought on for a substandard song left the stage. What a voice the man has, as good live as on disc, every song embellished and lifted by the live experience. If you get the chance see the boy SOHN.

  • He was absolutely amazing. I know it sounds crazy but Im 24 and never been to a real concert before and SOHN has officially made me fall in love with the experience. I bought a ticket for my boyfriend as well. He's never heard of SOHN and he completely enjoyed the entire experience from beginning to end. Everything from the music to the lighting was fantastic. Excellent live performance. Excellent vocals. Excellent first concert experience. I really appreciated everything.

  • This show was absolutely amazing. He sounds incredible exactly how he sounds on his songs. They did a great job with the lighting and the effects provided being a small venue and it felt very intimate even within a larger crowd. His energy, although the music is very mellow, was still very upbeat and intense and I couldn't help but be hypnotized by his performance. Would definitely go to another of his show in a heartbeat. My sister became an instant fan.

  • The show was awesome. His opening act, William Doyle, was great. I didnt know what to expect with him but he blew me away with his voice. I will be following him know. Sohn's production was great! His voice is better live. He did all the songs that I love. I will continue to support him. His career is about to take off. Glad i was able to see him in the beginning stage.

  • It was so good. It amazes me how entertaining it was considering he was sitting down the entire set. People around me seemed to enjoy themselves too, dancing and stuff. I think a SOHN show could be a great time even if you haven't heard his music before. Personally, the songs make me want to dance. His vocals are amazing. I just had a really good time! 10/10 would recommend.

  • Sohn was an amazing experience. His vocals ring out like a loud, beautiful bell over his intricately crafted beats. There was really cool lighting rods set up all around the stage that were coordinated with the music and really made the show into a "show". I was really impressed by the sound quality and how he flowed the songs and the encore.

    Would definitely see him again!
