Emu

This document provides an overview of the key components that make up the power and control systems on an EMU train. It describes the pantograph that collects electricity from overhead lines, the circuit breaker that distributes power, the main transformer that steps down voltages, and auxiliary circuits that power ancillary components like cooling fans. It also outlines the main rectifier used to convert AC to DC for the motors, details of the four traction motors in each coach, and the various brake systems including electro-pneumatic and emergency brakes. The conclusion suggests AC motors could also be used and notes some components are imported rather than locally made.

INTRODUCTION

PA N T O G R A P H
It is a collapsible frame work made of metallic tubes and articulated by ball bearing.
Pantograph is use for smooth and sparkless current collection from overhead line and to feed the tranformer primary winding through circuit breaker. It is designed to maintain the continuous flow of current inspite of oscillation at high speed and the varietion in height of the contact wire at different places.

Contd
The air pressure require for panto rise is 4.5 kg/cm &3 3.5 kg/cm for lowering. Time taken to raise - 6 to 10s & for lower - 10s. Material of panto strips Silica Manganese spring steel. Composition : Carbon + Manganese + Silicon + Sulphur + Phosphorous.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
It is a Electro pneumatic high seed circuit breaker. It extends the 25kv power supply from pantograph to Transformer . Two type of circuit breaker are use in EMU. One is ABB & VCB.

MAIN TRANSFORMER
In EMU step down transformer use. 25kv voltages is directly supplied to the transformer primary and other end of primary winding is grounded with rail though axie brush. It secondary winding divided in two part. 1st half is divided in five equal tap and other is untapped.

The connection between tapped &untapped winding is being done by winding change over switch WCO(w1 & w2). Tapped portion give control the motor speed. And other give auxiliary supply. In transformer we are use force ventilation. Transformer having three separate secondary winding. a) Motor b) Auxiliary 1 circuit c) Auxiliary 2 circuit

AUXILIARY 1 CIRCUIT
EMU such as oil pump, oil pump & motor , oil cooling system , rectifier cooling fan , battery charger supply of this given by aux 1. Oil pump: - it is provided to circulate the transformer oil to keep it cool. Oil pump & motor: - it is mounted in transformer oil pipe line. Rectifier cool fan: - it is provided to cool the rectifier diodes.

AUXILIARY 2 CIRCUIT
The main compressor and LTR relay are connected in in Auxiliary 2 ckt . through the auxiliary supply rectifier.
It is also given power supply in Signal Bell/Code Bell , Alarm Bell , Fans , Light , Emergency Lights , Head Light , Emergency Head Lights etc.

MAIN RECTIFIER
Is connected between motor & transformer. Full wave bridge rectifier is use. For cooling use force ventilation. Each bridge is protected with two fuses 1000 volt/1450amps. over voltage protection,ac damping net work system is there.

MOTOR
The EMU motor are D.C. series self excitation type motors . There are 4 Traction motors in each motor coach and they are connected in parallel with the Rectifier DC output. Motors are axle mounted & nose suspended. A single reduction gear is used for Transmission of power to the axle. Each motor is having individual contactors both in positive and negative side.

BRAKES
Five type of brakes present in emu. a) E.P(Electro Pneumatic) b) Auto c) Emergency d) GDS Emergency e) Dead man device

CONCLUSION
In EMU we are using DC series motor, when we can use AC motor also. some parts of emu not made in India.
