Concord is an agreement form between

subject and verb or auxiliary in a sentence. If the subject of the sentence is in singular form, the verb or auxiliary must be in singular form too. If the subject of the sentence is in plural form, the verb or auxiliary must be in plural form too.

Very often, if the subject and verb are separated, they will be separated by a prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase has no effect on the verb. To determine the main subject in a long phrase, see the word before preposition. The study of languages is very interesting.

Subject that states distance, volume, weight, money, percentage and time are always considered singular. So it must use singular predicate. Examples : 12 months has 365 days. 75% of Indonesian populations lives in Java. 70 kilograms was my weight when I was young.

Some words are often confused by students as being plural. The following words must be followed by singular verbs and pronouns.

Examples : Something was under the house. No problem is harder to solve than this one. Nobody works harder than John does. Everyone likes her.

None/No can take either singular or plural verb, depending on the noun which follows it.

When either and neither are followed by or and nor, the verb may be singular or plural, depending on the whether the noun following or and nor is singular or plural.

If the subject begin with gerund, the verb must be singular.

Examples : Knowing her has made him what he is. Meeting him makes me happy. Dieting is very popular today. Swimming makes us healthy.

A number of contestants have arrived here. A number of guests are talking each other. The number of + plural noun + singular verb

The number of months in a year is twelve. The number of the voters who are going to vote seems confused.

The words above are considered plural. They can be singular if we put a pair of in front of those words. Examples : The pants are of 100% cotton. A pair of scissors is stainless. These jeans are old. A pair of pants is in the drawer. The pliers were on the table.
