(Near Field Communication) : Abbasali Kakal Manjyot Rait Stanford Pinto

NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a short-range wireless communication technology that allows data exchange between devices within 10 cm of each other. It was developed in 2004 as an extension of RFID technology to enable two-way communication. The NFC Forum was formed to set standards, and every NFC-enabled device will have an "N-Mark" trademark. NFC works by inductive coupling between loop antennas in each device and uses a frequency of 13.56 MHz for data transfer rates between 106-424 Kbps. Potential uses include contactless payments, data sharing, and electronic ticketing by waving two NFC devices close together.

(Near Field Communication)

By :Abbasali Kakal Manjyot Rait Stanford Pinto

Introduction
NFC(Near Field Communication) is the latest technology available in Smartphones today. It was first thought about and developed in the year 2004. NFC is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology that enables the exchange of data between devices over about a 10 cm distance.

A little about NFC.

NFC or Near Field Communication is a short range

high frequency wireless communication technology. A radio communication is established by touching the two phones or keeping them in a proximity of a few centimeters. NFC is mainly aimed for mobile or handheld devices. NFC is an extension of Radio frequency identification or RFID technology. RFID is mainly used for tracking and identification by sending radio waves.

In 2004, NFC Forum was formed by Nokia, Philips, Sony, to set standards for NFC . Every NFC enabled device will have N-Mark trademark ,developed by NFC Forum.

The N-Mark Trademark

Getting into the details.

NFC standards cover communications protocols and data exchange formats, and are based on existing radiofrequency identification (RFID) standards.
NFC builds upon RFID systems by allowing two-way communication between endpoints, where earlier systems such as contactless smart cards were one-way only. Since unpowered NFC "tags" can also be read by NFC devices, it is also capable of replacing earlier oneway applications.

Operation Of NFC
Near field communication is based on inductive-

coupling. NFC works using magnetic induction between two loop antennas located within each other's 'near field.

Technical Stuff
Operating frequency 13.56MHz Data rate 106 Kbit/s to

424 Kbit/s. NFC use an initiator and a target; the initiator actively generates an RF field that can power a passive target.

Uses Of NFC.
Uses of NFC : Matching encrypted security code and transporting access key; Instant payments and coupon delivery using your handset, as we do with your credit card or debit card; Exchange of information such as schedules, maps, business card and coupon delivery in a few hundred milliseconds; Pay for items just by waving your phone over the NFC capable devices Transferring images, posters for displaying and printing

Advantages
High convenience to the user, because the data exchange is done by bringing two mobiles together.
Reduces cost of electronic issuance . Secure communication. No special software.

No manual configuration and settings.

No search and pair procedure.

Disadvantages
The system has the limitation that it can be operated only with devices under a short range i.e around 10 cm.
The data transfer rate is very less at about 106kbps, 212 kbps and 424kbps.

Conclusion
Mobile handsets are the primary target for NFC and soon NFC will be implemented in most handheld devices. Even though NFC have the shortest range among radio frequency technologies, combining them with existing technologies like Bluetooth or Infrared can increase its range of applications.
