Cathode-Ray Tube: CRT Monitor

CRT monitors use cathode ray tubes that shoot electron beams at phosphors on the inside of the screen to produce images. CRTs have excellent viewing angles but are large, heavy, and consume significant power. LCD displays use liquid crystals between glass plates to control light from a backlight and produce images without flickering. They are thinner and lighter than CRTs but have limited viewing angles. Newer TFT-LCD and LED displays provide improved image quality over basic LCDs with technologies like thin film transistors and LED backlights.

cathode-ray tube

CRT MONITOR

CRT STANDS FOR CATHODE RAY TUBE

CRTs are funnel shaped. At the back of the tube there are three electron guns (red , blue and green) that shoot electrons towards the phosphor coating which is on the inside of the glass screen.

The phosphor functions as the CRT transducer. It converts the energy of the electron beam into light. When the particles hit the three different colored phosphors ,they immediately light up thus making up the picture on the screen.

Advantages of CRT
Excellent viewing angle
The Cathode Ray Tube monitors have lower price rate than the LCD display or LED display. The quality of the image displayed on a Cathode Ray Tube is superior to the LCD and LED display.

Disadvantages of CRT
Large size and weight. Relatively high power consumption. Generates a considerable amount of heat when running. Produces flickering or fading effect at some stages.

LCD Liquid Crystal Display

LCD WORKING
A LCD display has a sandwich-like structure with liquid crystals filled cells(red, green and blue cells) between two glass plates. LC may flow like a liquid, but its molecules may be oriented in a crystallike way.
A fluorescent light source(like thin tube light)

serves as the Backlight in LCD. Picture Elements or Pixels are formed by liquid-crystal cells that change the direction of light passing through them.

When voltage is applied it causes the crystals to twist and realign so that varying amounts of light can shine through each coloured cell, thus creating images.

Advantages of LCD
Very compact and light as compared to heavy CRTs. Very low power consumption as compared to CRT displays.
LCD monitors don't produce the flicker or fading effect that CRTs do, generating less eye strain. Can be made in almost any size or shape.

Disadvantages of LCD
Limited viewing angle causing color, contrast and brightness to vary, by variations in posture. Fragile and can be easily broken.

LCDs are costlier than CRTs.

Limited life span about 50,000 hours.

TFT LCD
Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD) which uses thin film transistor (TFT) technology to improve image quality.

It also consumes less power compared to LCDs.

LED Display
LED is the advanced version of LCDs that uses a LED(light emitting diode)backlight instead of fluorescent one.

It provides better blacks, colours and contrast thus improving the image quality.
Consumes less power than LCDs and are much thinner.
