Computer Software Introduction - Tutorial 1

This document discusses computer software, including system software and application software. It defines key terms like software, hardware, operating systems, and networks. It explains that system software includes programs like operating systems, compilers, and drivers that allow application software to run. Application software consists of programs that produce information for users, like word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. Application software is further divided into general purpose software suitable for many tasks, and special purpose software tailored to specific functions.

How to Classify a computer?

Hardware

Software

Hardware
physical parts of your computer which you can

physically touch or see such as your monitor, case, disk etc. Parts of the computer you can see Computer hardware, being part of a machine, can only understand two basic concepts: on and off. The on and off concept is called binary. Some Examples :

Computer Hardware

Software
Computer Software are set of instructions that tell the

computer what to do. Software is written in a computer language (such as Basic, C, Java, or others) by programmers. Before processing a specific job, the computer program corresponding to that job must be stored in memory. Once the program is stored in memory the compute can start the operation by executing the program instructions one after the other Compiling is the process of changing the textual written language into a binary language which can be understood by the computer.

ANALOGY
If you were to think of a computer as a living being hardware :would be the body that does things like seeing with eyes, lifting objects, and filling the lungs with air. Software :
would be the intelligence, interpreting the images that come

through the eyes, telling the arms how to lift objects forcing the body to fill the lungs with air.

Computer Software
Computer software was developed in order to tell

the computer hardware what to do or How to do. Computer software is the key to productive use of computers.

Software can be categorized into two types:

system software

Application software.

Application Software
Application Software consists of programs that

tell a computer how to produce information. Some of the more commonly used packages are:
Word processing Electronic spreadsheet Database Presentation graphics

Word Processing
Word Processing software is used to create and

print documents. A key advantage of word processing software is that users easily can make changes in documents.

Electronic Spreadsheets
Electronic spreadsheet software allows the user to add, subtract, and perform user-defined calculations on rows and columns of numbers. These numbers can be changed and the spreadsheet quickly recalculates the new results.

Database Software
Allows the user to enter, retrieve, and update

data in an organized and efficient manner, with flexible inquiry and reporting capabilities.

Application Software

Application software
General purpose application software

Special Purpose application software

General purpose application software

This type of software is developed keeping in mind

the general requirements for carrying out a specific task. Many users can use it simultaneously as it fulfils the general requirements. General Purpose Application Software is likely to be used by a wide range of users to develop their own applications. For example,: a spreadsheet program is a general purpose application. It does spreadsheets, but those could be spreadsheets that you use to balance your checkbook, or manage your fantasy football league.

Special purpose software

Special purpose software which performs a particular

business/scientific/industrial task. e,g, Retail purchasing software which accepts customer orders, produces an invoice and possibly a packing/delivery note sent directlyto the warehouse automatically. Special purpose application software is more limited in what it will do, but it usually goes that one thing much better than a general purpose program. For example, TurboTax (a tab preparation package) is a special purpose application. Sure, it adds and subtracts numbers like a spreadsheet, but you can't use it to track your fantasy football league. It does one thing - prepare tax returns.

System Software
provide a platform for running application software System software refers to the files and programs that make up

your computer's operating system The programs that are part of the system software include assemblers, compilers, file management tools, system utilites, and debuggers. System files include libraries of functions, system services, drivers for printers and other hardware, system preferences, and other configuration files. The system software is installed on your computer when you install your operating system. Since system software runs at the most basic level of your computer, it is called "low-level" software. System software is a program that manages and supports the computer resources and operations of a computer system while it executes various tasks such as processing data and information, controlling hardware components, and allowing users to use application software. That is, systems software functions as a bridge between computer system hardware and the application software.
