Application of GPS in Vehicular Traffic Management Assignment

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that provides location and time information to GPS receivers anywhere on Earth. GPS was originally developed for military use but is now used widely in civilian applications. Some solutions using GPS for traffic management include fleet management systems that collect data from GPS-fitted vehicles to provide real-time traffic speed and arrival time estimates to passengers. Historical data on weather, day of week, and peak hours can also be used to help processing results for more efficient journeys. Other solutions like "Geo traffic" and "Where is My Bus" provide commuters with the fastest and shortest routes as well as real-time traffic mapping.

Global Positioning Systems

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellitebased navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

collecting data of GPS-fitted vehicles, which talk to their servers for information processing, and give real time result of the travel time of each vehicle. A company CSR specializing in wireless technology studies the pattern of traffic in areas where the tracked vehicle are moving and interprets and predicts the composite traffic speed in that area. Taking the GPS feed and the data collected ,for the passengers, a time estimation can be provided of when a certain vehicle will arrive at a certain stop. The estimation time can be made available through SMS,through smart phone applications. By use of GPS which part of city is crowded and alternate routes can be found.

Historical data such as weather, season, day of the week (weekends), festivals, and peak office hours are also gathered by our intelligent server and is fed into the algorithms which help in processing the final results for a congenial journey of the commuters on the roads License Plate Reading:Kritikal Solutions, the first startup spun out of IIT-Delhis incubation center, has some unique products such as the licence plate reading system and a traffic analyzer that is based on image processing.Using its own image processing algorithms, Kritikal Solutions offers
