Week 1 Sequence

The document outlines a lesson plan for a Math 10 class focused on sequences, including definitions, examples, and exercises for identifying and generating sequences. It covers both finite and infinite sequences, provides examples of sequences in various forms, and includes practice problems for students. The lesson aims to enhance students' understanding of sequences through definitions, tables, and general rules.

WEEK 1 – 1st QUARTER

MATH 10 –
F2F CLASS
At the end of the lesson, the
learners will be able to:

1. define sequence.
2. write the sequence in table form.
3. find the next few terms of the
sequence.
4. illustrate the domain and range
of the sequence in table form

What is a sequence?

A sequence It can be a
pattern of :
is a pattern. • objects
• music
• letters
• or numbers
Sequence
A sequence is a function whose domain is the finite Ellipsis
set { 1, 2, 3, …, n} or the infinite set {1, 2, 3, …}.
Finite Sequence is an arithmetic sequence with finite
elements in the domain.
Example: Set of all numbers from 1-50 which are all
divisible by 5.
Ans.
Infinite{5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50}
Sequence is an arithmetic sequence with
infinite elements in the domain.
Example: Set of all numbers which are divisible by
3
Ans.
{3,6,9,12,15,18,...}
Let’s Check Your Understanding!
Identify if the given sequence is finite or
infinite.
1. Set of all integers from 1-10. Finite

2. Given sequence 3, 5, 7, …41 Finite

3. Set of all odd integers greater than 20. Infinite

4. Given sequence 12, 16, 20, 24, … Infinite

5. Set of all positive integers divisible by 3. Infinite

A sequence may be generated from shapes, patterns,
or rules. Each number or element in a sequence is
called a term.
Each item below shows a pattern.

1. What is the next color? Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,

Blue, Violet
Indigo, ______

2. Find the next term on the given sequences? How

about the 7th number?
a. 0,4,8,12,16,___ b. 1, 4, 9,16,___

answers: a. 20 and 24 b. 25 and 49

Sequence in table form.
Write the Sequence 3, 9, 15, 21 in table form.
Domain 3
x n 1 2 4
Range an
y 3 9 15 21

n = is the term number

an = is the nth term
Sequences may come in rule form. These are
sequences stated in general rule.
Example 1. Find the first 5 terms of an =3n + 2 and
write its domain and range in table form.
General Rule
an = 3n + 2 an = 3n + 2 an = 3n + 2
a1 = 3(1) + 2 a2 = 3(2) + 2 a3 = 3(3) + 2
a1 = 3 + 2 a2 = 6 + 2 a3 = 9 + 2
a1 = 5 a2 = 8 a3 = 11
General Rule
an = 3n + 2 an = 3n + 2
a4 = 3(4) + 2 a5 = 3(5) + 2
a4 = 12 + 2 a5 = 15 + 2
a4 = 14 a5 = 17

Sequence 5, 8, 11, 14, 17

Domain x n 1 2 3 4 5
Range y an 5 8 11 14 17
Example 2. List all the indicated terms of finite
sequence an = 2n2 – 1 for 1 ≤ n ≤ 5

Solution:
an = 2n2 – 1
a1 = 2(1) -1
2 a2 = 2(2) -1
2 a3 = 2(3)2 -1
a1 = 2(1) -1 a2 = 2(4) -1 a3 = 2(9) -1

a1 = 2 - 1 a2 = 8 -1 a3 = 18 -1
a1 = 1 a2 = 7 a3 = 17
Solution:
an = 2n2 – 1

a4 = 2(4)2 -1 a5 = 2(5)2 -1
a4 = 2(16) -1 a5 = 2(25) -1
a4 = 32 - 1 a5 = 50 -1

a4 = 31 a5 = 49

The five terms: 1, 7, 17, 31, 49

Solution:

The four terms: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5

Practice and Application ( 3 mins.)
1. Find the first 5 terms of an = 4n - 6.

The five terms: -2, 2, 6, 10, 14

Practice and Application ( 3 mins.)
2. Given the general rule an = 4n2 - 5, find the first 5
terms of the sequence.

The five terms: -1, 11, 31, 59, 95
