Operation of Function Addition and Subtraction

The document defines the operations of addition and subtraction for functions, providing formulas for their sum and difference. It gives specific examples using the functions f(x) = x + 5 and g(x) = 2x - 1, calculating (f + g)(x), (f - g)(x), and their values at x = 3. Additionally, it includes practice problems for further application of these concepts.

OPERATION OF

FUNCTION
( ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION)
Definition. Let f and g be functions.

1. Their sum, denoted by f + g, is the function denoted

by (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x).

2. Their difference, denoted by f − g, is the function denoted by

(f − g)(x) = f(x) − g(x).
Given the functions:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) =
2x − 1
a. (f + g)(x)
b. (f − g)(x)
c. (f + g)(3)
d. (f − g)(3)
Given the functions:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) = 2x − 1

a. (f + g)(x)= f(x) + g(x) definition of addition of

functions
=(x + 5)+(2x − given 1) values
replace f(x) and g(x) by the

= 3x + 4 combine like terms

Given the functions:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) = 2x − 1

b. (f − g)(x) = f(x) − g(x) definitionfunctions

of subtraction of

= (x + 5) − (2x −given 1) values

replace f(x) and g(x) by the

= x + 5 − 2x distribute
+ 1 the negative sign
= −x + 6 combine like terms
Given the functions:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) = 2x − 1

c. (f + g)(3)= f(3) + g(3)

Solve for f(3) and g(3) separately:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) = 2x − 1
f(3) = 3 + 5 g(3) = 2(3) − 1
=8 =5
∴ f(3) + g(3) = 8 + 5 = 13
Given the functions:
f(x) = x + 5 g(x) = 2x − 1

d. (f − g)(3) = f(3) − g(3)
