Measuring Area
H
Using the
Appropriate Unit.
QUARTER 1 - WEEK 1
Look at the picture below. Which of these
is a square? A rectangle? Why? Explain.
What do you call this shape?

How many square tiles can fit

into a notebook?
In this lesson, we will learn
how to determine and
estimate the size of an area
using square tiles. Area refers
to how much space an object
covers, such as a table, a
sheet of paper, or a floor.
We will use square tiles to see
how many pieces can fit inside a
square or rectangular shape. This
way, we can better understand
what area is and how it is
measured. Knowing how to measure
area is important because it is used
in many everyday tasks.
What is the area of this yard if
each side measures 5?

Formula: Area of
square
SxS
Area refers to the measurement of
the space occupied by an object. In
the subject of Mathematics,
understanding how to find the area of
simple shapes such as squares and
rectangles is important because it
has practical uses in daily life, such
as measuring a table, floor, or paper.
A square has four equal sides, while
a rectangle has opposite sides that
are equal. To measure their area,
one can use square tile units or
square units to estimate or actually
determine how much space they
cover. By placing square tiles inside
the shape, you can find out how
many units make up its total size.
By placing square tiles inside
the shape, you can find out how
many units make up its total
size.
This is a practical way to
understand the concept of area
in a concrete manner.
You will notice that each figure
contains small squares inside it.
One square corresponds to 1
square unit. The total number of
square units covering the entire
square or rectangular shape is
called the area.
Example 1:
Let's go back to Figure A.

To find the area of this

FIGURE A
square, simply count the
total number of squares
inside it. The total
number of squares
inside it is 16.
Therefore, the area of this
square is 16 square units.
Example 2:
Now look at Figure B.
Just like in the first
example, count the total
number of square units
inside the rectangle. The
total number of squares
inside it is 12. Therefore,
its area is 12 square units.
The unit used here is simply
"unit" because no centimeters
(cm) or meters (m) are indicated.
If the object is small, the unit
used would be centimeters, and
if the objects are large, the unit
used would be meters.
Aside from counting square
units, there is another way to
find the area of a rectangle or
square.
Example 3:

In Figure B, suppose its

length is 3 centimeters and its
3 CM.
width is 4 centimeters.

What do you do with 3 and 4

to get the area of 12 square
centimeters
4 CM.
(sq.cm)?
Area of Rectangle = length x width
A rectangle = L x W
Area = 3 cm. x 4 cm. =
A = 12 sq. cm. or 12 cm

3 CM.

4 CM.
Example 4:

Now find the area of the

square in Figure A.

You can see in the figure that

all its sides are equal in length.
Therefore, it has no distinct
length and width.
The formula for finding the area
of a square is:
Area of square = side x side
A square = s x s
Area = 4m x 4 m
A = 16 sq. m.or 16 m

4
Direction: Find the area of each
picture and write the correct answer
with the appropriate unit on your
answer sheet.

L = 6m , W = 3m
L = 56 cm W = 38 cm
S = 12m
L = 40 m W= 55m L = 3 mW = 5 m
Direction: Write the missing number.

1. 10 cm. 5 cm. __ sq. cm.
2. 6 cm. 3 cm. __ sq. cm.
3. 9 cm. 2 cm. __ sq. cm.
4. __ cm. 5 cm. 75 sq. cm.
5. 5 cm. __ cm. 20 sq. cm.
REMEMBER:

 "The area of a square or

rectangle can be measured using
square tiles.”

 "The number of tiles is

equivalent to the area."
Direction: Answer the following
questions.

1. What is the area of a square with each

side measuring 9 meters?

word problem.

Your mother bought a tablecloth. It

has a length of 2 meters and a width of
1 meter. What is its area?
In the previous lesson, you
learned how to measure area using
the appropriate units. Now, you will
learn to solve both routine and non-
routine problems involving the area of
squares and rectangles.
Look at the example below.
Examine how routine and non-routine
problems are presented using the
area of squares and rectangles.

Example:

The notebook measures 20

centimeters in length and 15
centimeters in width. What is the area
of the notebook?
Questions:

1. What is the shape of the notebook?

2. What unit was used to measure the
notebook?
3. How do you find the area of the notebook?
Answers:

The shape of the notebook is a rectangle.

The unit used to measure the notebook is
centimeters. To find the area of a rectangle,
multiply length by width.
Area of Rectangle = length × width
= 20 cm × 15 cm
= 300 square centimeters

To find the area of a square, multiply

side by side.

Area of Square = side × side =

unit × unit
Solving Non-Routine Word
Problems

A non-routine word problem is

another type of word problem.
There are different ways to solve
non-routine word problems. Some
of these methods include drawing
and trial and error. Solve another
word problem.
Example 1:

Mrs. Santos bought fabric that

is 12 meters long. She needs 2
square meters of fabric to sew
one dress. How many dresses can
Mrs. Santos make from the fabric
she bought?
1. What is being asked?
The number of clothes
2. What data is given?
Length is 12 meters,
width is 2 meters
3. How will you solve the
problem?
You can draw the problem
(make a sketch)
4. What is the formula for the
area of a rectangle in measuring
its size?
Area of Rectangle = length ×
width
A rectangle = L × W
5. What is the correct answer?
Area = 12 × 2 = 24 sq.
meters
Area = 24 sq. meters
The picture shows a piece of
cloth measuring 12 meters in
length and 2 meters in width
It can also be observed that a
piece of cloth measuring 2 square
meters is equivalent to 2 squares.
This is shown by the 2 squares
colored yellow and blue.
If you count, you can cut 12 pieces
of cloth, each measuring 2 square
meters.
Therefore, Mrs. Santos can sew
12 dresses from the cloth she
bought.
Example 2:

Irish cut a rectangular cartolina

for her project. The length of the
cartolina is 8 centimeters and the
width is 5 centimeters.
How big is the area of the
cartolina?
1. What is being asked? The
area of the cartolina
2. What data is given? Length
of 8 centimeters, width of 5
centimeters
3. How will you solve the
problem? Using the operation
of multiplication
4. What is the formula for the
area of a rectangle in finding its
measurement?

Area of a Rectangle = length ×

width A rectangle = L × W

5. What is the correct answer?

Area = 8 × 5 = 40 centimeters
(cm) Area = 40 centimeters (cm)
Example 3:

Carlo drew a square garden in

their backyard. Each side of
the garden is 6 meters long.
How large is the area of Carlo's
square garden?
1. What is being asked? The
area of Carlo's square garden
2. What data is given?

3. How will you solve the
problem? Using the
operation of multiplication
4. What is the formula for the
area of a square in finding its

4. What is the number sentence?
5. What is the correct answer?
