Software is a set of instructions,
data or programs used to operate
computers and execute specific
tasks.
Types of Software
Software can be categorized into two main types:-

System Software: Application Software


System Software
System Software: System Software is a type of
computer program designed to run a computer
hardware and application programs. The Operating
System is the best example of system software.
Application Software
 Productivity Software: This type of software is used for creating documents,
presentations, spreadsheets, and more.

 Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


 Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
 Zoom Meeting
 Web Browsers:- Web Browser is a program that allows
users to access the internet and view content on the World
Wide Web.

 Media Players: Software for playing audio and video
files. Examples include:-

An Operating system (OS) is a collection of programs that
manages a computer's hardware and software. It's
responsible for many tasks, including: Managing resources:
The OS manages resources like printers and disk drives.
Utilities
A computer utility is a type of software that helps
maintain, monitor, configure, or analyze a
computer. Utilities are usually smaller than standard
programs and can be installed separately or included with
an operating system.
Device drivers
A device driver is a computer program that allows an
operating system or application to communicate with a device
attached to a computer. Device drivers act as an intermediary
between the internal system and external hardware.
