Robotics Presentation 33 Slides

Robotics is the science of designing and building robots, aimed at creating efficient machines to perform tasks. The term 'robotics' was coined by Isaac Asimov in the 1940s, and it includes three fundamental laws governing robot behavior. Robots are utilized across various fields such as security, space exploration, healthcare, and agriculture, offering advantages like speed and precision, but also present challenges like job displacement and maintenance costs.

Robotics

What is
Robotics?
Robotics is science of
designing or building
an application of
robots. Simply, It is
“The study of Robots”.
The aim of robotics is
to design an efficient
robot.
First use of word “robotics”
The word “robotics”, used to
describe this field of study, was coined
accidentally by the Russian-born,
American scientist and science fiction
writer, Isaac Asimov in 1940s.
Three Laws of Robotics:
 First Law : A Robot may not injure a
human being.

 Second Law : A Robot must obey the

order given it by human being, but does
not conflict 1st law.

 Third Law : A Robot must protect its own

existence, but does not conflict 1st & 2nd
law.
What is a Robot?
A re-programmable,
multifunction, automatic
industries machine
designed to replace
human in hazardous work.
Why do we need Robots?
• Speed
• Can work in hazardous/dangerous
temperatures and places
• Can do repetitive task
• Can work with accuracy
The First robot
“unimate”
It is the first industrial robot ever
built. It was hydraulic
manipulator arm that could
perform repetitive tasks.

It was designed and patented in

1954 by American engineer
George Devol and was
developed by Unimation Inc., a
company in 1956 by American
engineer Joseph Engelberger
”Father of Robotics”.
Robotic Technology
Most industrial robots have at
least the following five parts:

1. Sensors
2. End Effectors: It is a device or
tool which is connected at the
end of the robot arm where
hand would be.
3. Actuators: It is a device that
causes something to happen.
4. Controllers
5. Arms
Types of
robots:
• Mobile Robots

• Stationary Robots

• Autonomous
Robots

• Remote-
Controllers Robots

• Virtual Robots
Mobile Robots

Mobile Robots are of two types:

• Rolling Robots
Rolling robots have wheels to move around.
They can quickly and easily search. They are
only use in flat area.

• Walking Robots
Robots on legs are usually brought in when
the terrain is rocky. Most robots have at least 4
legs; many have 6 or 8 legs.
Stationary Robots
Robots are not only used to explore area
or imitate a human being. Most robots perform
repeating task without ever moving an inch.
Most robots are working in industry settings are
stationary.
Autonomous Robots
Autonomous robots are self
supporting or in other words self
contained. In a way they rely on their
own ‘brains’.
Remote-Controllers Robots
A persons can guide a robot by remote
control. A persons can perform difficult and
usually dangerous task without being at the spot
where the tasks are performed.
Virtual Robots

1. Virtual robots don’t exist in real life.

2. Virtual robots are just programs,

building blocks of software inside of
computer.

3. A virtual robot can simulate a real

robot or perform a repetitive task.
Search Engine use such kind of robots.
They search World Wide Web and send
information to search engine.
Advantages:
 Going to far away planets.
 Going far down into the unknown waters and mines.
 Giving us information that humans can’t get.
 They don’t get bored.
 They can perform tasks fasters than humans and
much more consistently and accurately.

2. It needs supply of lots of Power
3. It need maintenance to keep it running
4. It is expensive
