DIGITAL TO ANALOG CONVERTER

AIM: To construct and test a digital to analog converter using the IC DAC 0800.

D/A CONVERTER

The purpose of the digital to analog converter is to convert a binary word to a proportional analog current or voltage. A binary weighted resistive divider network is used for conversion. Let us consider the circuit diagram for DAC. When one of the switches is closed, a current will flow from reference voltage point (+5V) through the corresponding resistor to the summing point. The operational amplifier will pull the current on through the feedback resistor to produce a proportional output voltage.

For example, if the switch D0 is closed, the value of the current that flows to the summing point is equal to 5/100K = 0.05mA. In order to pull this current through feedback resistor the operational amplifier must put a voltage of 0.05mA*10K = 0.5V at this point. If also the switch D1 is closed, it will send a current = 5/50K 0.1mA. The voltage drop = 0.1mA*10K = 1V. The total drop across the output = 1+0.5 = 1.5V.

Hence the binary weighted resistors produce binary weighted currents, which are summed by the operational amplifier to produce a proportional output voltage. The output voltage VO is calculated as follows,
VO = Vref {A1/2+A2/4+A3/8+ A4/16+A5/32+A6/64+A7/128+A8/256} For Vref = 10V, and if all switches are closed, then VO = 10 {1/2+1/4+1/8+1/16+1/32+1/64+1/128+1/256} VO = 10 (255/256) = 9.9609V.

RESOLUTION: It is determined by the number of input bits of the D/A converter. For example, an 8-bit converter has 28 (=256) possible output levels. Hence the resolution is = 1/28 = 1/256 Volts.

FULL SCALE OUTPUT VOLTAGE: The full scale output voltage is = Vref (2n 1/2n) where n is the number of bits in the input word. The full scale output voltage is = 10(28 1/28) = 10 (255/256) = 9.9609V. The maximum output voltage is 1LSB less than that of the named value. Therefore 1LSB = 10V (1/256) = 0.03906V.

PROCEDURE: Give the connections as per the circuit diagram shown in Fig.1.
Switch on the power supply. Provide the required digital input through the switches as indicated in tabular column. Observe the corresponding output voltage and compare with the theoretical value.

ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERTER AIM: To construct and test an analog to digital converter using the IC ADC 0804. THEORY: The IC ADC 0804 is an 8-bit analog to digital converter based on Successive Approximation technique with 120 seconds conversion time. Fig.2 shows the block diagram of Analog to Digital converter based on Successive Approximation technique. Also shown in the figure are the pattern of clock input, comparator output and the bits. On the first clock pulse at the start of the conversion cycle, the Successive Approximation Register (SAR) outputs a high on the MSB, this corresponds to Vref/2 which is applied to one input of the comparator. If this voltage is higher than the input voltage applied at the other end of the comparator, the comparator outputs a low to make the SAR to turn off that bit. If the input voltage is higher than the MSB, the SAR makes that bit ON.

When the next clock pulse occurs, the SAR turns ON the next MSB, based on the output produced from the comparator. The SAR will retain or reset the bit in this way until the least significant bit is reached. ADC 0804 works with an internal clock for which resistors 10K and capacitor 150Pf are connected at pins 4 and 19 for clock generation. The conversion is initiated by writing logic 0 at pin 3. After the time greater than the conversion time of 120 s, the digital data will be available on the output pins.

PROCEDURE: Give the connections as per the circuit diagram shown in Fig.3. Switch on the power supply.

Vary the analog input voltage from 0v to 5v in steps of 0.5 volts.

Observe the corresponding digital value through the glow of LED and compare with the theoretical value as shown in tabular column.
