Area of Shapes

The document explains how to calculate the area of various shapes, including rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. For rectangles, the area is found by multiplying the length by the width, while for triangles, the area is calculated using the formula ½(bh), where b is the base and h is the height. Parallelograms have an area calculated by multiplying the base by the height (bh) as well.

Area is a measure of
how much two –

AREA OF
RECTANGLES
The area of a rectangle
is the product of the
length of the width.
For example, consider a
rectangle that is 3 ½ cm
by 2 ½ cm.

HOW CAN WE USE MOVING AND
ADDITIVITY PRINCIPLES TO DETERMINE
AREAS OF TRIANGLES?
The base of a triangle can be any one of its three sides.
In a formula the word base or a letter, such as b, which
represents the base, really means length of the base.
Once a base has been chosen, the height is the line
segment that
WHAT ARE  Is perpendicular to the base, and
BASE AND  Connects the base, or an extension of the base to the

HEIGHT vertex of the triangle that is not on the base.

 In a formula, the word height or a letter, such as h,
FOR which represents the height, actually means length of
the height.

FORMULA FOR THE AREA OF A
TRIANGLE
The familiar formula for the area of a triangle with base b and
height h is
Area of triangle = ½ (bh) square units
If a triangle has a base that is 5 inches long, and if the
corresponding height of the triangle is 3 inches long, then the area
of the triangle is
½(5 · 3) in^2 = 7.5 in^2

AREA OF PARALLELOGRAM

If a parallelogram has a
base that is b units long,
and height that is h units
long, then
Area of parallelogram = bh

For example, if a
parallelogram has a base
that is 2 meters long and
height that is 5 centimeters
long, then the area of the
parallelogram is
