Visual Representation of Data

Data visualization involves creating visual representations of data to effectively communicate insights, aiding in business intelligence and decision-making. Various types of visualizations include line charts, bar charts, pie charts, scatter charts, and more, each serving different purposes such as showing trends, comparisons, or distributions. These tools help users understand complex data through clear and intuitive graphical formats.

Visual Representation of Data

Data Visualization

• Data visualization is the creation of visual

representations of data.
• These representations clearly communicate
insights from data through charts and graphs.
• In terms of business intelligence (BI), these
visualizations help users make better data-
based decisions.
Visual Representation of data
• Indicator
• Line
• Bar
• Pie
• Scatter
• Bubble
• Tree map
• Histogram
• Heatmap
• Boxplot
• Choropleth Map
• Sankey Diagram
• Network Diagram
• Radial Chart
• Gantt Chart
• Streamgraph
• Indicators show one KPI, clearly
– These are particularly useful when you want to
give an instant idea of how well the business is
doing on a particular KPI.
– Incorporating a simple “gauge indicator”
visualization shows you immediately whether
you’re above or below target, and whether you’re
moving in the right direction.
– This is especially effective if you incorporate color-
coding, like red/green coloring or up/down
arrows.
A numerical indicator like the one below on the right is even
more straightforward giving a simple headline figure and an
indication of how it compares to the previous
year/quarter/month, etc.
Line charts display trends
• Line charts are resoundingly popular for a
range of business use cases because they
demonstrate an overall trends.
• Line charts good for depicting trends for
different categories over the same period of
time, to aid comparison.
• For example, this graph visualizes sales figures
by age group for three different product lines:
Bar charts break things down, simply

• Bar charts are great for comparing several

different values, especially when some of
these are broken into color-coded categories.
Pie charts clearly show proportions

• Pie charts easily show the share each value makes up of the
whole.
• This pie chart illustrates which operation bring in the biggest
share of total leads. You see at once that AdWords is the most
effective source, followed by social media and then webinar
signups.
Scatter charts: distribution and relationships

• Scatter charts present categories of data by circle color and the volume of
the data by circle size;
• They’re used to visualize the distribution of, and relationship between,
two variables.
Bubble charts: understand multiple variables

• Similar to scatter charts, bubble charts depict

the weight of values by circle circumference
size. However, they differ in that they pack
many different values into one small space
and only represent a single measurement per
category.
• This kind of visual storytelling can help users
focus on their biggest challenges or successes,
easily.
• For example, take this bubble chart based on this research by
the New York Times, which breaks down how the US
government’s $3.7 trillion in “welfare” is actually spent:
Tree maps:display hierarchies, compare values

• A tree map is used to display hierarchical data

in a nested, rectangular format. It's useful for
showing the composition of a whole and how
it breaks down into subcategories.
Histogram
• A histogram represents the distribution of a continuous
dataset by dividing it into bins and showing the frequency of
data points in each bin. It's used to visualize the data's
distribution
Heatmap
• A heatmap uses color to represent data values in a matrix. It's
often used to visualize relationships between two categorical
variables or to show the intensity of a variable across two
dimensions.
Box plot
• This displays the distribution of a dataset using a box with
whiskers. It provides information about Among other things,
the median, the interquartile range (IQR) and the outliers can
be read in a boxplot.
Choropleth Map
• A choropleth map uses color-coding to represent data values on a geographical
map. useful for displaying regional/geographic data
Sankey Diagram
• A Sankey diagram is used to visualize the flow of resources or
values between different entities. It's often used to show how
inputs are transformed into outputs.
Network Diagram
• Network diagrams display the relationships and connections
between different entities or nodes, often used in social
networks or flowcharts.
Radial Chart

• A radial chart, also known as a radar chart or spider chart

• Radial charts, such as radial bar charts or radial line charts,
display data in a circular format. They are suitable for showing
hierarchical data or cyclical patterns.
Gantt charts
• Gantt charts are used in project management
to show the timeline of tasks and their
dependencies.
Streamgraph
• Shows how the composition of data changes
over time. Similar to stacked area charts but
with smoothed, flowing shapes
