Evaluating Functions - Lesson 2

This lesson focuses on evaluating functions, teaching students how to substitute values into a function and compute the output. It provides examples of function evaluation, including step-by-step processes for different functions. Key takeaways include the importance of correctly substituting variables and using parentheses to avoid errors.

Lesson 2:
Evaluating
Functions
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson,
I can…
•Recall the lesson about real-life
functions;
•Substitute values in a function; and

•Evaluate functions.

How to evaluate functions?
•Evaluating a function means replacing
or substituting the variable in the
function, in this case x.

f(x) = 3x + 4, if x = 2
Find f(2) if f(x) = 3x + 4
Example #1:
Evaluate f(x) = 3x + 4, if x = 2
1 f(x) = 3x + 4 copy the given
2 f(2) = 3(2) + 4 replace x with 2
3 f(2) = 6 + 4 perform the operations
4 f(2) = 10 answer
Example #2:
Evaluate the given functions at x =
2.
g(x) = x – 2x + 2
2

copy the given

replace x with 2
perform the operations
answer
Example #3:
Evaluate the given functions at x = 1.5.

𝑔 ( 𝑥 )= √ 𝑥 +1
Example #4:
Evaluate the given functions at x = 1.5.
2 𝑥 +1
𝑟 ( 𝑥)=
𝑥 −1
Example #5:

Find F(0) and F(-1)

Example #6:
Find g(-4) & r(1) where g and
r as define below the given
function.
2 𝑥 +1
𝑔 ( 𝑥 )= √ 𝑥 +1𝑟 ( 𝑥 ) =
𝑥 −1
What you need to
remember…
- The classic way of writing a function
is f(x) = …
- To evaluate a function is to
replace or substitute its variables
with a given number of
expression.
- It is recommended putting the
substituted values inside the
parentheses ( ), so you don’t
make mistake.
