Module 5C Simple Random Sampling, HH Mapping

Module 5C focuses on simple random sampling methods for selecting households (HHs) for interviews, emphasizing the importance of equal selection chances for all HHs in a cluster. It outlines procedures for both having and not having a list of HHs, including mapping and numbering techniques. The module also includes practical exercises for selecting HHs and guidelines for revisiting households if necessary.

Simple Random Sampling

Module 5C
Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able

to:
 Determine which simple random sampling
option to use.
 Implement correct simple random sampling
procedures.

Module 5C
Simple Random Sampling

 Simple random sampling is a method to

randomly select HHs to interview.
 All HHs in the ‘cluster’ have an equal
chance of being selected.
 If simple random sampling is performed
correctly it will result in a representative
sample of the cluster.

Module 5C
Simple Random Sampling
Options

1. Have a list of HH: use a random number

table to select HH.
2. Do not have list of HH:
a) Make a list, then use a random number
table to select HH, OR/
b) Make a map, then use a random number
table to select HH.

Module 5C
Option 1: Have List

Module 5C
Household List in the Field

Module 5C
RNT to Select HHs from HH
List

Module 5C
2a: Do Not Have List – Make a list
of HH
 Village leader must know the village
very well.
 Small cluster: can make list from one
place.
 Large cluster: walk around cluster with
village leader.
 Can be a good option if there are no
sensitivities providing family/head of HH
names.
Module 5C
2b: Do Not Have List – Draw a map
of HH

Module 5C
Household Map Without
Numbering

Module 5C
Mapping HHs in Cluster

1.Ask the village leader to help map the HHs in the

cluster by walking around the cluster with the
team.
2.Determine a start point and an end point for
mapping HH in the cluster.
3.Begin mapping the cluster starting from the top of
the page (the page can be horizontal or vertical).
4.Walk around the entire cluster with the village
leader. Map different kinds of buildings and
geographical features (such as HHs, schools,
roads, water points, etc.) and include them in the
map legend.
Module 5C
Mapping HHs in Cluster
(con’t)

5. Ask the village leader to point out HHs

that are abandoned (NOT absent). Mark
abandoned HHs by an “X” so that they
are not selected (abandoned HH should
not be part of the final HH list/numbering
count).
6. Ask the village leader to point out HHs
that have more than one family living in
them. These should be marked as
separate HH.
Module 5C
Mapping HHs in Cluster
(con’t)
7. Structures with more than one family living
in them will be divided as follows:
1. Families that eat from the same pot and
live under on roof:
 These families will be recorded as 1 HH on the
map.

2. Families that do not eat from the same

pot even though they live under one roof:
 These families will be recorded as 2 HHs on the
map. Record the name of each of the head of
HHs on the map. Module 5C
Household Selection

1.Number all HHs in the cluster in any

order starting from the top of the page.
2.Select individual HHs to be visited using
the RNT. Ask village leader to assist with
using the RNT.

Module 5C
Exercise: Circle HH on map

 There are 59 HH in the cluster. You must

choose 12. You have selected the
following HH using the random number
table. Circle them on the map.
 7, 14, 20, 49, 3, 4, 22, 42, 30, 9, 23, 31

Module 5C
Exercise: Circle HH on map

Module 5C
Before Leaving the Village

 Revisit any household at least once in

which a child or the whole family was
absent at the first attempt.
 Team leader reviews and signs all
forms.
 Make sure all the equipment is in the
vehicle.
 Thank the chief of the village or the
representative for their collaboration.
