Types Evaluation of Functions Week 1 Day 3

The document outlines the learning objectives related to functions, including substitution, types of functions, and evaluation of functions. It defines a function, explains function notation, and describes various types of functions such as constant, identity, linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, and greatest integer functions. Additionally, it provides examples and exercises for evaluating functions and understanding their properties.

Welcome

to our Class…
Learning Objectives:

1. recall the process of substitution;

2. identify the various types of
functions; and
3. evaluate functions.
FUNCTION
A function is a relation whose first element
x in the set of distinct ordered pairs ( x, y )
is paired exactly once
with y.
FUNCTIONS
 A function is a mathematical
relationship between two variables,
where every input variable has one
output variable.
 independent(input value) and
dependent(output value) Variables
Function Notation
Another way of writing is
Remember that

f(x)
g(x)
h(x) y
.
.
TYPES of FUNCTION

Types of Ex.
Function Description
Constant A constant function is a function that has the same y=7
Function output value no matter what your input value is.
Because of this, a constant function has the form f(x)
= b , where b is a constant (a single value that does
not change).

Identity The identity function is a function which returns the f(2)=2

Function same value, which was used as its argument. In other
words, the
identity function is the function f(x), for all values of x.
Types of Ex.
Function Description
The polynomial function with degree one. It is in y = 2x+5
 Linear Function the form y = mx + b

 Quadratic If the degree of the polynomial function is two, y=3x2+2x+5

Function then it is a quadratic function. It is expressed as y
= ax2 + bx + c , where a ≠ 0
and a, b, c are constant and x is a
variable.
 Cubic A cubic polynomial function is a polynomial of y=
Function degree three and can be denoted by f(x) = ax3 + 5x3+2x2+3x+5
bx2 + cx +d where a ≠ 0 and a, b, c, and d are
constant & x
is a variable.

A recall: Evaluation of Expressions
We have learned that, in an algebraic
expression, letters can stand for numbers. And
to find the value of the expression, there are
two things that you have to do.
1. Replace each letter in the expression with
the assigned value.
2.Perform the operations in the expression
using the correct order of operations.
note: use PEMDAS or GEMDAS
Do you still remember?
Given the following expressions, find
its value if x = 3.
1. x − 9
2. 3x + 7
3. x2 + 4x +10
4. 2x2-6x+26
5. 2x3-4
Function Notation
The f is the name of the function machine and the value
inside the parentheses is the input. The expression to the
right of the equal sign shows what the machine does to the
input. 25

Which do you prefer to write?

f 25 
OR Evaluate f when x = 5

Example

1. If f(x) = 2x + 3, find f(5).

f 5   2 5   3
When evaluating, do
You want x=5 since f(x)
not write f(x)!
f 5  10  3 was changed to f(5)
You wanted to find
f(5). So the
complete final f 5  13
answer includes f(5)
not f(x)
Example 3.
