UNIT 3: COLLECTION AND TRANSFER OF WASTES

8
hrs

Methods of Residential and commercial waste collection –

Collection vehicles – Manpower – Collection routes – Analysis
of waste collection systems; Transfer stations –location,
operation and maintenance; options under Indian conditions –
Field problems- solving.
COLLECTION ROUTE

any road or public road on which a waste collection service is provided by

an authorized waste collector or local authority on a regular and frequent
basis
COLLECTION ROUTE

Determination of Collection Route

 Based on Heuristic approach (common Sense),

 Trial and Error Approach

 Based on Philosophy- collecting more waste with leaser resources

in spite of all constraints like equipment break down, holidays and

vacations, good labour practices.

COLLECTION ROUTE

Guidelines to select collection route

 Crew size and vehicle must be known and coordinated.

 Beginning and end of the route should be nearer to major roads.

 Topography or physical boundary should be the boundary of the

route.
WASTE COLLECTION
WASTE COLLECTION
Carried out in Five Phase
Phase I
Generation to onsite Storage- Waste generator (Individual house Owner)

Phase II
site storage to Transport- Collection Crew (Backyard Collection)
- Home Occupant (Curb side Collection)
Phase III
Transport from house to house

Phase IV
Transport from house to Transfer station
Phase V
Transport from Transfer station to Disposal site
TYPES OF COLLECTION ROUTING
Macro-Routing

 Total area is divided into route which will represent single day
collection of each group.
 Also referred as route balancing.
TYPES OF COLLECTION ROUTING

Micro-Routing

 Specific path covered by each crew and collection vehicle per day.
 laid out based on the results of macro routing.
TYPES OF COLLECTION ROUTING
Districting
Done when area is large enough the area is divided into smaller sections
LAYOUT OF COLLECTION ROUTING

Steps involved in establishing collection routes

 Preparation of maps showing the point of waste generation

 Preparation of information summary table

 Preliminary route lay out

 Development of balance routes after trials

EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE
Layout Collection Routes for the residential areas shown in the figure in the
previous slide. Assume the following data,
1. General
Occupants per resident = 3.5
Solid- Waste Generation Rate = 1.6 kg/person.day
Collection frequency =1
Collection Crew size = One Person
Collection Vehicle Capacity= 20 m3
Compacted density of solid wastes in collection vehicle = 325 kg/m 3
2.Route Constraints
No U-turns in streets
Collection from each side of street with stand up right hand
